Does hostgator ever off coupons or discounts to transfer domains?

They currently charge $15 per transfer per domain.

Because that's what "everyone" says to do.

Leave it at your current registrar. Just point your DNS to the host.

Don't transfer domain registration to Hostgator. It's too expensive and completely unnecessary. I host most of my websites at Hostgator but have them all registered at namecheap.com. That's the best way to do it imo.

Ok, I will register at namecheap next time.

I wasn't aware you could just point the DNS like that.
But what if domain is about to expire? Just renew it at old server (which is Bluehost?)

Hostgator already seems much faster...This will not effect it's speed will it?

Let me ask again, if my Bluehost hosting is set to expire in October, can I still point DNS to HostGator (which is good till Sep 2013) hosting? Or does info get wiped out once hosting account on Bluehost is terminated?

Or do I need to pay for hosting on both to do the DNS method?

It's not clear to me from your questions where your domain is registered versus hosted (and whether BlueHost provides one service or the other or both).

Think of domain registration and hosting as two separate services. You can (and, in my case, I always) registered my domains with one provider and host them with a different company. I point the DNS from the registrar to the hosting company. If you transfer only registrars, you point the DNS from the new registrar to the same hosting company (your site may be down for 1-2 days). If you transfer only hosting companies, you point the DNS from the same registrar to the new hosting company (again, your site may be down for 1-2 days).

Don't forget, if you have email set up (either pointing to or from) at the company you are switching, that you have to change that too.

Thanks Jim..Im a bit lost in the lingo, but let me explain some more:

I originally registered the domain and paid for a year of hosting on Bluehost (they do both).

Last month I wanted to switch hosting companies, so I purchased a year of hosting on HostGator.

Now that my Bluehost hosting plan is about to expire, Id like to as economically as possible get those domains I have on Bluehost over to my HostGator hosting account.

I do not want to renew my host plan on Bluehost.

      Thanks.

I have an account with HostGator where I can get as many sites as I want hosted for one price! I remember I got that when I first joined about 5 years ago. I'm sure they still do that!

I recommend transferring your domain registration(s) from Bluehost over to namecheap before expiration. Then change your nameservers to Hostgator.

That's perfect advice,by letting HostGator renew your domain every year you will be paying probably double if not more, keep it at Namecheap or even GoDaddy and use coupon codes when it's time to renew to save yourself a few dollars.

    Hi,

two months ago I have migrated my website and domain to HostGator. I just had to purchase one of their Hosting Plans and then they did the migration of my website and domain for me and I had nothing else to pay! You will get detailed information on their website...

    Hope that helps
