Covert Messenger Error Login Failure

Hello Warriors,
I have come upon a problem that has stumped me. I installed the Covert Messenger Plugin on my WP Blog, and now when I attempt to login directly,or if I click on my email link to moderate the comments, I can't get into my dashboard. I get a message that says, "could not get update information" and my browser tab says "Covert Messenger Error." Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem? Thanks.

    Hi Mark.
I realize that this answer comes a few months after you asked the question and you will no doubt have solved the problem by now, however this will help others that search for it after you and so for that reason I have decided to post the answer.

The reason I know it is because it has happened to me a few times, the last being just now when I decided to finally search for what is causing the problems in the first place. There does seem to be a slight problem with the "Covert Action Bar Plugin" that we are both using, but what is actually causing the problem I am not sure. All I can do is tell you how to fix it for a few months at a time.

If you FTP into your hosting you can then go straight to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory for your blog and download the Covert Action Bar Plugin directory to your pc. After you have successfully downloaded the plugin directory to your pc, you should then delete it from your /wp-content/plugins/ directory.

You will then be able to login to your WordPress blog as normal. Go straight to your installed plugins, and you will see the following message:

"The plugin covertactionbar/covertactionbar-plugin.php has been deactivated due to an error: Plugin file does not exist."

You can then feel free to upload the Covert Action Bar Plugin back to your wp-content/plugins/ directory. When you refresh the installed plugins page within your WordPress blog you will see that the message has gone away and your Covert Action Bar Plugin is installed successfully, but simply needs activating again.

Reactivate the plugin and check its settings under Settings/Covert Action Bar on the left of your screen. You should find that it has remembered your previous settings and you will be able to carry on as normal until the next time that it screws up, which it seems to do every few months.

At least everyone now knows that it is nothing too serious and you can soon fix the problem even if it is only temporarily!

I hesitate contributing to keeping stale threads open, but it's worth noting here that you don't need to download then delete the plugin folder. Simply renaming the folder on the server will deactivate the plugin; when you're ready to reactivate, rename the folder back to its original name and reactivate on the plugins page.

And don't try it again. Usually, it results in immediate deleting of your post, if you dig up old threads!

I am glad he dug up and answered this post. I was frustrated and looking for this answer, and it never would have occurred to me to delete Covert Messenger. So, thanks from me.
