Upgrading Themes and Plugins

I hope this is not a silly question. I am new to using wordpress and my updates are piling up. I have an update for my theme and some plugins that wordpress says I need to update. I know updates are important. I have not done this yet because I am afraid that if I do I will loose everything. Is this true? I have not really done any changes to code, but I do have a header and pics and plan on eventually trying to change the font type, color and size.

Should I be worried about upgrading?

Rather than being worried about upgrading you should be worried about not upgrading..!

No - you won't lose everything when you upgrade however, problems can arise and they will be almost always caused by a plugin (if not a plugin then a theme). If you do get problems simply deactivate all your plugins and reactivate them one by one until you find the culprit.

I always follow a clear process for major WordPress upgrades, and I set it out here:

I would add that if you or your developer have made customizations to your theme without using a custom.css file or child theme, then yes those changes will be lost.

First step, back your site up with a plugin like duplicator, then even if everything breaks, it is easy to restore.

But basically you can update Wordpress and plugins with no problems. Just be careful upgrading your theme if you have made tweeks to it.

well, WP could be also seen as an example of "too many cooks in the kitchen": too many teams put various pieces of code together (i.e. plugins and themes). Most times they seem to work "good enough", but then again the quality of the code from every plugin varies, and the only way to truly know what is really going on in there is to look at the PHP source code ... and who seriously here has the time to do that?
This being said, WP is a great piece of work. And you should definitely try to keep your site "up-to-date".
And above all backup your site, that's probably the only safe way to keep your data safe is in a backup (and hopefully you know how to recover from a backup)
