Try SimplePress from Simpleress. Forum plugin is free, but if you want to add fancy modules those cost $39.00 for a one time fee (buy Silver membership, that will do for future upgrades). You can see it in action at one of my site at Shaadi | Shaadiconnections.com | Ratedesi
To prevent spam, spiders, and scrappers, I highly recommend to install ZBBlock from http://www.spambotsecurity.com. Wordpress installation instructions are in their Support forum. It is free. It is the most effective spam/bot security script, I had came across in my 20 years of experience. I have not received a single spam during past 9 months. Do not forget to install Wordpress StopForumSpam Registration plugin in addition to ZBBlock. Once in a while 0.1% bots may get through ZBBlock, which StopForumSpam Registration plugin blocks if the IP is found in the StopForumSpam database.

PS: SimpleForum will not have any ads on your forum, even though it is free.

Good luck! Also note they have several forum import plugins. You should be able to import your existing forum into Simpleress without loosing data or manually doing migrating.

Try installing phpbb, mybb, or smf in separate folder. A standalone forum that uses independent database is perfect for this set-up.

for plugins, I used mingle for over a year for one of my mmo gaming forum, then switched to bbPress.
for forum basic function, not too fancy... the free forum plugins are good enough in my opinion. They get updated from time to time to fix bugs and they are integrated so your members dont have to register again.

Is there a way to do it without a sub domain? I had the site built and hosted by a company and don't really want to mess about with sub domains if possible, is it just as easy to have - myseite.co.uk/forum?

Simpleress will give http://www.mysite.co.uk/forum. No need to have a subdomain. You install it as a WP plugin, create a Forum page and insert the SimplePress shortcode in the page.

Why are you sure if you have not used it? I said it does because I had been using since a couple of years. It is the best Forum plugin for Wordpress.

I understand your frustration. But sometime, experience help

SimplePress is developed by commercial organization. They make money by selling plugins and support. bbPress is OK, it also has no ads, but I found primitive. Mingle is will flood your forum with ads (they make money by selling ads). SimplePress is not distributed through Wordpress Plugins repository therefore many new comers do not know about it.

Well if that is the situation I would just recommend going with a standalone forum and implenting some database connection between WP and it. (phpBB, myBB, vBullentin etc.)
