Experienced Designers Read This

WEB DESIGN

I have realized that web design is a really valuable skill to have if you are going to be an internet marketer. Of course you can outsource it but why not just learn it, save yourself the money, and always make your sites exactly how you want. I know a few marketers in particular that do this and they are uber successful.

It is also very important to me because as I know I'm going to be spending a LOT of time on IM, I want to be able to say I have a hard skill that is marketable for freelance work(web design).

Anyways I wanted to ask experience web designers:

What knowledge exactly does someone need to appropriately call themself a "web designer"?

I was thinking WordPress knowledge, CSS, HTML, PHP, a little Javascript maybe....(I already know how a site SHOULD look for marketing purposes)

And...

Do most web designers just use one premium theme that they are familiar with?

Hmm... just because you are selling your skills online as a wannabe web designer... that's not internet marketing.

In that case you are offering a service and that's all.

Oh, and real web designers know how to code their own theme: tweaking an existing theme (even if it's premium) requires only basic skills, not really designing talent.

I believe there is a difference between developers and designers, no?

Often one is left brained and the other right brained... and then some that think they are developers or designers but are really no brained

Many artists do not want to code and most often a developer hates doing art work. That being said, a little knowledge in both worlds does help not only for you doing the work yourself, but knowing what you and they are talking about when you do outsource.

What I understand is a web designer is one who looks after the look and process map of the functionality. The developer brings it to life by coding.

  ^ agreed. IMO a designer is like a graphics designer, they make the look and feel of the site come together - they know enough to modify psd slicing/html/css/php/java but may not have quite the same level of programming expertise that a developer should have.
