I'm using the Portfolio Press theme for my Wordpress blog and am wondering if there's a way to add a section in the right-hand menu where I can add a list of blog contributors that link to respective pages about them.

I've tried adding a new category on the Widgets page and it has an 'uncategorized' link - how do I add new separate pages to this section that will be the contributor pages? - Or is there a better way to do this?

Sounds way too complicated than it actually is. Make sure to use a theme with the ability to use "Custom Menus" that can be created and managed within the WP dashboard. If the current theme does not support custom menus, just Google for a tutorial on how to add custom menu in a theme.

Now, create menu with your desired items. For author pages, create links to their pages and place all of them under one menu, say, Authors. For placing a menu item as a child under another, just drag the menu towards slight right under the parent menu.

Agree with xtrapunch that custom menus appear to be the best solution for your request.

Here's a quick youtube video on how to create and edit WordPress custom menus (this should work with any theme that supports custom menus)
