Setting up a blog on a wordpress website

I am trying to setup a blog for my wordpress website so in order to do this I am trying to create a static homepage as my site currently doesn't have one.

Now obviously this would be easy if I could select my homepage under settings > reader > front page displays. But as my website was setup by someone else, for some reason, the homepage is not available in the dropdown.

So...to get around this I have created a new page called 'home' which I want to use as the static page. But since creating this new page I currently have 2 'home' pages displaying in my navigation bar. Also, the new homepage is obviously not displaying as my homepage should. I have tried deleting some code in the header.php file, which removes the additional 'home' from the navigation menu but the new page doesn't display as my home page should.

I hope this makes sense to someone? If anyone has some advice on how to get this blog setup it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Will

The new page you have created is the default wordpress page which would be blank. The home page which you are using currently is the index.php file which contains your content. Since you say you want a static front page and blog page different, enter the content in that new page you created, and then select another page as blog page.

If your current home page contains a lot of elements, like some latest posts, boxe,s etc, then you need to create a page template and assign it to the home page.

Hi! You didn't say how you had your blog set up. I use WordPress all the time and here's what I do when I want a static home page as well as a blog on the site.

Delete any pages set up by default by WordPress.
Set up a new page called "Home."
Set up a blog page called "Blog" (or whatever you wish to name your blog).
THEN go to the Reading setting.
Set the static page to Home.
Set the posts page to Blog (or whatever you called it).

After doing above, the second Home page should disappear on the nav bar. This process works for me every time. Good luck!

Was the original "homepage" set up as a Page or Post?

There's no reason why the "homepage" shouldn't have appeared in the list.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure as it was setup by a web designer and not myself. The homepage doesn't appear on the list of pages.

The only thing I can edit on the homepage is a couple of blocks of text and I edit these using a couple of tabs on the left hand menu in wordpress.

Hi Karen. Yes thats exactly how I have tried setting it up but the new home page that I have created displays the default template and not my actual home page. Im not sure how to get the new page to look like the old home page. If that makes sense??
