I've just started throwing together a couple of sites using this free program and was curious if anyone here was using it with a completed site up and running that was created using the software?

It's basically an updated version of Composer that came with the old Netscape Communicator suite. Although I think Composer is still bundled with Mozilla Sea Monkey. Basic features, but all WYSIWYG. Coming from doing Flash based sites (my last being function9), it seems like a bit of a step backwards, but fun all the same. Definitely a lot more fun than having to edit a CSS style sheet.

Plus I've read somewhere that Google prefer simple HTML sites with basic heading tags and all the rest.

There's nothing wrong with Nvu for learning HTML, and doing basic sites, but try working with it for a long time or on more complex projects and you'll get frustration. It has a habbit of trying to 'help' keep your code tidy but in fact it messes up your formatting.

If you're just getting started stick with it - it's a great learning tool. If you find yoruself doing a lot then invest in something like Dreamweaver - you'll thank yourself in the end!

I used NVU for a while but didn't like. Dreamweaver is good but complicated I found so I'm back with good old Notepad. With Notepad you're in control.

I use Nvu. I think the latest version that works on some bugs is Komposer. I may get that version.
It works fine for me. I thought about Dreamweaver, etc. but I just don't see the use for it yet. I don't even mess with css style sheets either. I know most folks claim it is great, but better pay attention or one mistake could mess up entire site--LOL (just hearsay).
I just like the simple stuff. I even build websites for business clients. Works just fine.

Seriously for a freeware its very good. NVU sometimes is even better than dreamweaver IMHO.

NVU is the bed free WYSIWYG for simple sites...
If you want a complicated site though with nice graphics and everything than I highly recommend not using it.
I've spent hours trying to deign difficult sites with NVU and let's just say it didn't turn out well....at all.

I use NVU for basic layout and editing tasks where I want a WYSIWYG HTML editor, and it works just fine. For serious PHP development I use PS Pad (freeware) and UltraEdit (commercial).

If you're just editing squeeze pages and one-time upgrade offers NVU is great.

Nvu was abandoned and Kompozer took its place. That was some time ago.

Nvu and Komposer have sort have been replaced by SeaMonkey, which is better maintained, by the same organization that does Firefox.

  • I use NVU. It is not perfect, but it will get the job done, and its free.

I like to put in my vote for Notepad++ for clean code, and great free software!
I just open up the file in the browser if I want to preview my work.
