Does WP take as much hacking as Joomla?

I'm an amateur, self-taught Joomla user, and fairly proficient. However, it seems that often, to make an extension work, it requires I hack some code, and that's where I get in trouble, and have no knowledge.

So I'm thinking of switching to Wordpress. Is it easier to use than Joomla? Will it require just as much code hacking? Do plugins install easily into the backend?

Any recommendations? It seems Wordpress is almost as powerful as Joomla now. Am I right?

Thanks!,
Amy Kay

Wordpress is definitely much much easier than Joomla

I have moved most of mysite to Wordpress.

If you know Joomla, you will find Wordpress very simple.

Joomla is way harder to learn than Wordpress. Both have their good points though. I use both but if I need a quick website with some easy plug ins I always use WP.

I have to agree with the prior two posts. Both are good but wordpress is way easier to mess around with on a simple site. It all depends on what you want to do and the plugins you need.

Joomla has a more sophisticated user security model than WordPress and this makes WordPress a bit easier to "hack". In my opinion both platforms lack a lot of good information about how they work internally, I recently built my first Joomla component from scratch and that was the most frustrating part.

I still think Joomla is a more powerful platform than WordPress (at least from a technical standpoint) but WordPress has become very capable, especially since release 2.7. For every 1 Joomla site I create I build 10 WordPress sites, it is much easier to use and I can have a site "on the air" in a matter of minutes.

I've created some WP sites since I posted, and they are super easy! I especially like that I can install several plugins without actually downloading them onto my machine.

I agree, however, that for a very sophisticated site, I would still use Joomla.

Wordpress is certainly better for blogging, since that is what is designed for. Neither is flexible enough to meet all of my needs, which is why I only work with custom systems. I do recommend Drupal, however, though its learning curve is steeper than either. It is very good for professional developers, and offers tons of flexibility. It is also much more powerful than Joomla.
