Can't Figure Out Where This Domain Is Registered...

Man, am I stumped. Hope someone here can help me.

My client's website is located at domain-01.com I'm trying to set up Google Business for so that she and her employees can receive their email at domain-02.com. In order to complete the process I need to figure out where domain-02.com is registered so that I can "switch the MX records".

When I go to whois.domaintools.com and login to my account there, it shows domain-02.com as registered at GoDaddy. The registrant, etc. is "Domains By Proxy". Domain servers are pointed to Hostmonster.

But when I log in to my client's GoDaddy account, there is no record of her ever having purchased domain-02.com. It is nowhere in her Order History (thus I am unable to switch the MX records).

You might assume that my client is mistaken and does not actually own domain-02.com. But as part of the process of setting up Google Business I needed to upload a verification file to prove ownership of the domain. I was able to do this successfully from inside her Hostmonster account, after adding domain-02.com as an add-on account. I wouldn't have been able to upload a file to domain-02.com without the proper ftp info, so my client obviously owns it... right?

The last step in setting up Google Business is to switch the MX records, but in order to do that I need to find out where it's registered. Why would the whois record show it's at GoDaddy when it isn't? I'm so confused.

Because the domain is registered with GoDaddy, simple as that.

I would maybe ask GoDaddy support... maybe they can enlighten you.

No. Having the right FTP credentials does not mean that your client owns the domain. I can buy a domain right now, have it pointed to your web space, and you would have the FTP credentials and I would own the domain name.

If the whois record shows it's registered by GoDaddy, then it's probably registered with GoDaddy. But it looks like it might be registered under a different account than domain-01.com is. Maybe your client forgetfully opened two GoDaddy accounts and one domain is registered in each account. Or maybe somebody else associated with your client registered the domain through GoDaddy under a different account.

Even private registrations have an email address listed in the whois record. If the owner of the domain has it set up properly so that the email forwards to an email that they use, then you could email the address listed in the whois record to find out about its ownership.
