Is Stablehost really good?

HI, I moved from HG to Stablehost, mostly because of many recommendations here on WF

I got me an Enterprise account (the small one)

BUT: In google pagespeed my website is now SLOWER than on HG
I still get this "H server slow response" urgent warning from google pagespeed

if I use pingdom tools to ping the server, the time is average at best (compared to all green on EuroVPS for example)

The move was smooth, but since then the support is nice but not sure technically much more advanced than I am

So right now I am not sure I am happy with stablehost or if i should move on

Any thoughts??

Thx

Dan

    Hi flmaec,

    thanks...

hmmm...but how do I check if a server is really fast ??

From my checks with google pagespeed, Stablehost is even much slower than HG

and I get in both cases and intensive warning for "improve server response time"!

Mind you, I have the Enterprise server on Stablehost, so had hoped to have a very fast server now...

pingdom tools are coming back with average results also...

so what is the litmus test for finding out if a server (bandwith, hardware, software) is any good and fast ... or not??

    Thank you

Is it the server or how the website and programming was setup?

I had a website on Stablehost that was scoring a 94, when I first started it was in the low 70s. After some optimizations the score improved.

One other thing, Stablehost uses litespeed. If I remember right, some plugins for cache made the website slower because they use litespeed and I had to disable them.

StableHost is a reputable hosting provider. How is the performance of the site via browser? There's tons of things that could factor into performance issues. Have you brought this to their attention?

    Hi Farish, Hi King,

    thanks for helping me here

well, I think the themeforest template is a drain ... I donT know how, but the last P3 plugin check showed 120 Database queries... not sure why

but I would think that "server response time" is about the hardware (drive speed, hubs etc) and not so much about my website?

Will check about the plugins and litespeed, do you know of a "compatible list"?

Kingfish, well, it is a bit like catch22 ... they have a VERY nice support, but I say..."hey, google pagespeed says this", then they say something "well, send me the traceroute from your PC", I say "hey, but I care about visitors like google, not my personal access from Europe"...they say, "ah, ok, how can we help you"...I say, "well, pls check why Google pagespeed say 'slow server'" ... they say "how do you know that your personal traceroute would not help"
I "I don't care about German access", I care about worldwide and esp Googel pagespeed ...They say " ah ok, how can we help you" ....aaaarrrggggg!!!

    for me this leads nowhere

So perhaps I am an overthinker and a bad customer, but IO moved the server to have better results than with HG (whose service is really good) and not WORSE

does that make any sense ??

    Thx

What type of website is this? I'm curious as to what those 120 DB connections are as well.

Regarding server response, this can be all over the map. Between point A (you) and point B (server) there can be 500 different devices that the traffic passes through. This can cause all different response times. A high/low response time doesn't really mean your website will load faster or slower. If you're pinging your website, a high response time could be a direct result of a problem with the website itself, DNS, routers, switches etc etc.

Personally, I wouldn't pay any attention to the Google page speed. I'd focus more on the quality of service being provided and the features included. in combination with the quality of your site & content. Too many people rely on Google this & Google that.

    Hi Kingfish,

    thank you...

well, I think that a fast website is very important , if not for google, then for the reader...and pingdom tools also showed just average results (I believe from Vancouver)

so yes, need to speed up my site because 10 secs loading time according to (sorry ) google analytics is much too slow

it is a normal magazine blog website...just lots of images...no idea why 120 database operations, will switch template anytime soon

and again, I think that server response time is technical...

so you think there is no reliable tool to see if a host has fast hardware or not?

    Thx

      Hi there,

Aside from signing up and testing, no unfortunately. I think you'd benefit from LiteSpeed as well as CloudFlare too.

Did we speak via email yesterday? The concerns, name and location seem similar to an email chat I had with someone yesterday.

I thought so. No worries, feel free to let me know if you have any other questions. I'd be more than happy to work out some sort of trial period to let you test our servers out.

      Thanks,

    HI Kingfish,

got a question looking at your website which might be of interest to others, too

What is bandwith...is that how muuch data can be sent at once ...or how much data can be sent per month? Since you offer ie. 170 GB I assume that is the max data sent to visitors per month...where can isee how much data is sent max per second?

Or what is a better way to judge how well a server is connected to the internet?

    Sorry if this is inaccurate

    Thx

      Hi there Dan,

No worries - all shared/reseller servers have 4 X 100mbps up/down connections. Our datacenter is connected with multiple fiber carriers with redundant routing & switching as well. Of course, the upload/download speed to your account would also be limited by your home connection as well.

We really don't have a way to display visitors per month/second/minute etc since each request could be a different amount of data. 1 visitor may view 1 page only requesting 10KB of data while another views multiple pages and requests 100KB of data.

All connections to the servers are shared with 1 high bandwidth pipe that (total bandwidth) we utilize per server, roughly 10TB of total bandwidth. Chances are, the average internet user will not require a limit on their mbps.

      Thanks,
      Brent

Stablehost also has EU servers (Amsterdam) if you want it closer, and it should be faster.
There's also EuroVPS, which has excellent shared hosting plans.

Base on latest benchmark, Stablehost is the best shared hosting for now.
