I wonder if wordpress is strong and secure for facebook-like or other fully-featured social media sites, or should it be done without wordpress at all? Any thoughts?

Facebook is a mature platform for content management. It's as secure as any other platform if you follow good practices in setting it up.

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.

Yeah, I downloaded Facebook and installed it on my domain and I've found it to be as secure as anything else that I've used.

Your question is unclear to me. Do you mean you want to use Wordpress to setup a multi-user site like facebook?

Or do you mean you want to make a new tab in Facebook and then use Wordpress as the contents of that page (Hosted on your website with SSL)?

    Some clarity would help.

OK, not sure if this would work for you or not. It is a theme called AgencyPress. Now it can be used for dating sites and stuff like that, but it says it can also be used for Community Sites.

Anyway, here is the demon site and the home page for the makers.

    Hope that helps you...

As for security, Wordpress has a huge installed base of users and security seems to be pretty good with a constant flow of updates. So you should be OK with that.

How large of a community do you plan to build?
What type of hosting account do you have?
    - Shared hosting accounts are not good for this and many hosts don't allow it at all.

    Hope that helps you!

Well, I would like it to be very large at the end. I got an impression it may be the best to actually build the site without using wordpress at all. Is a social media site creation manageable as a DIY project? Are there any books/resources dedicated to teach people in this area?

Good impression > forget WP if you want to build a "very large" social media site.

Based on your questions... the DIY route doesn't sound as something you are able to go with. Sorry.

I will teach you in one single sentence: Always use the proper tool for any task you need to perform; i.e. the right tool for the job.

FYI: there are social site scripts, even for free, just use your favourite search engine to learn about them.

          I agree to Istvan Horvath,
but one thing it's possible if you were a wordpress develop expert, you can expand wordpress script futher more than original it got. I saw more big sites did.

WordPress isn't a social app, and never will be.

From your question I got the impression you were wanting to use wordpress as a site builder template to build a social site. Is that correct?

It's possible with Wordpress and there are social media site themes available by vendors but not as powerful as Facebook. Themes can be customized to suit your unique needs providing you understand coding.

Building and maintaining a site like Facebook is not a DIY project. Think of things like user acquisition costs and the business side of making your site successful. Building a site is only a small piece of the puzzle to a successful online business.

Cheers! All the best with your endeavors.

Thank you all for the comments, they are very valuable.

Since there is no rush for me to build such site, I like to enjoy the journey of learning, and I wouldn't be going to the WP route. I will download some free social site script and try to really understand it, also there are quite a number of tutorial series on Youtube and a few of them are pretty legit and comprehensive (ie: Web Intersect), so I will take my time to learn.

Once I have a good working knowledge about all the aspects needed, I will start to assemble a bigger team, but it will be down in the road.
