Just wanted to ask how many versions of a home page do most people go through before they decide they have the right look and gives the feel for the site your working on. How do most people decide on a layout, I know it depends on the subject matter but promoting different things require a different look.

  • Good question marks,

Personally I’ve gone through dozens of iterations. I think the number of iterations you go through though shouldn’t be the driving metric of when you are finished. Note that your home page is the most common entry point into a website and so it should be designed in a way to drive people deeper into the site. Of course every business and individual will have their own goals for their home page but the most important thing is that you have a goal at all.

Think about what your goal is for the website and how the home page can help accomplish that. The go to work laying it out to accomplish that goal.

    Hope that helps,

There's no right number. If it's a static site, and I start with a complete design outline, just one or perhaps two or three.

If its a site that evolves, the home page is never finished.

...Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just set there.
