If i'm having a programmer develop web based software. Should I get a designer to sketch up a design, and tell my developer that I want my site this way.Or should I expect this guy to know both? Maybe hire both? How would I go about this. Thanks!

A programmer should be the best. If he has already do programming in the past, Then he should know what to do and how it should look.

Both are best, you need to combine both to make perfect product like website or software

A designer should design AND create the code for appearance.
A programmer usually couldn't design a box if you gave him a right-angle ruler.

This depends on your budget, but normally to get a job done well you need both. A programmer may not have the required design skill set.

Both is definitely better, but if you're lucky enough, you can find some crazy talented people out there who are amazing at both. And if you do, they'll probably cost a bit more as they'll be in high demand!!

By the way, sometimes it's easier to get your site built and selling first without throwing too much money at it. Prove there is a business there before spending a small fortune.

Surely it depends on the individual? A talented person could manage both.

    Why pigeon-hole people?

If you don't like the look of the programmer's work, then get a designer in.

I think you need both programmer and designer.Designing is entirely different from programming and if one person do both things then it may confuse the programmer.

It really depends on whats yoru interest and what you are good at, If you have good creativity then you can go for design and you are good at logics then you can go for programming.

Thank you all for the great advise. I've seen some of my programmers websites. Seem pretty simple on the designer side. Should my programmer know the design i have in mind prior to getting started? Or should i design first and let the programmer know I want the site to look like this on the front end? This will be critical component of my business and would love for all parties involved to have a good experience. Thank you all once again!

If you feel like you have strong design skills, then it should be possible to hire a programmer and direct the design yourself.

Ask your programmer. As a programmer, I tell my clients that they need to provide a design or designer because I have zero design talent what so ever. But I have colleagues who are great designers and programmers in one. Depends on the person. See if your programmer can design and if not, hire a designer.

Programmer and designer both are different from each other. So you can't do your work
by hiring one. You have to select different as well as experience for the design . Always keep it mind that designer should be good. The viewer nmormally motivated by the design of a site.

It's true that programmer and designer are different streams, just like architect and civil engineer but as in the second case - they can't work out with each other. Especially not when it comes to websites. You'll need to have both of them unless you are confident about your designing skills.

Programmer's programming what designer designed. I have had experience with outrageous programers who were producing top notch work but their design skills were desperate. Thus consider having both of them work on the project simultaneously.

  • You should have 1 guy handle both task. Lack of education in the field maybe the reason he is unable to do both.

Most of the web designer or developer know both. So you don't have to worry about that. If the guy you are hiring just know one thing, I think he or she is not the suitable person to hire.
