My software developer says he is developing my site in ASP.NET with SQL server. His previous work looks plain. If i hire a designer. Could the designer do his work when the developer is finished? Or would my developer and my designer have to work together to figure this out? If in case i took the outsource route.

also, what will i be looking for when hiring a designer as far as skills goes. Should I just check out his work? Thanks

I would hire a designer who could take responsibility and build out the whole project. No way would I hire a developer who didn't blow my socks off with his portfolio.

Except... most designers suck when it comes about coding (developing software) and most developers suck at design. Which means I don't see how a code-illiterate designer could take "responsibility" for the software part...

  • Crendon,

Robinintexas makes a good point. Its always easier to find someone who can design and develop. If that is not an option, you can always have someone design all the pages or the basic framework and provide you with images that you can pass along to your developer and say “here, make it look like this”.

    Best,

    Shawn

      Hello,

When hiring a designer you should check out their portfolio and work. You will want to find a talented designer that demonstrates a style similar to what you are seeking with prior work designing the item you want created (website, avatar, brochure, etc.).

You're designer and developer can work at different times but its best to have your designer create the website or interface, mark it up in HTML (many web designers know HTML, CSS, etc.), etc., then pass those files to your developer. You may have some coordination to do between the two. The skill set of your designer and developer also make a difference in how you divide up the work and how the two work together.

You could hire a firm to do everything for you. Finding a full stack developer with excellent design skills is possible but most developers I've come across lack the design flare of a professional designer. The two are distinct roles.

All the best. Hope this helps.

    Hiya,

Best way for you is to find a team of designers and developers working together.. Honestly its really hard to find one person which is good in both..

    Good luck

I've always been a fan of separating the design and development roles. The best programmers generally aren't visual - and they aren't supposed to be. Their job is to make the back-end functional and build an efficient database. Most designers can muddle through code and SQL, but they aren't doing it "right". They can make it work, but it won't scale as well unless you can afford to stay ahead of poor architecture with more powerful hardware.

If your developer is good, use him and hire a designer to polish the UI. It's easier to find a designer to make it pretty than a developer who's good at both.

Hire two teams working parallel way, i.e a team of designer and developer. Look at their work via portfolio. It’s always important to choose a designer/developer that has previous experience in the domain. Go for a web design/development company that is proud to show you their previous work.

Any developer worth his salt can take a competent designer's work and incorporate it into custom code.

Many, many, many designers worth hiring could not integrate a competent developer's custom work.

Your best bet is to get a designer, separate from the developer, involved in the project as early as possible. Don't wait until the end, or you'll be paying your developer a lot more than you planned.

You should get your site designed by a professional designer and get it coded from someone else.. Because a kick-ass designer can never be good at coding..

    Personal opinion..

The best designers are not programmers and the best programmers are not usually designers. Hire a designer and a programmer and get them to work together.

    Hi man,
I've been facing these kind of situation the whole time. Indeed, most programmer are not too "designy". That's why you need graphic/web designer.
Lots of my clients are hiring me to create the User Interface (graphical), then their (or ours) programmer will convert that design into whatever it is that your site is running on.
I really wish you'd show us the current website, so I can give more advice.

So, wish you all the best.
