Theme/Plugin Licenses

Hi, so I wasn't sure where this thread would fit so I posted here.

Just wondering what types of licenses there are for wordpress themes and plugins. I'm thinking of developing these and was wondering what the rules were for basing a theme on another, or using a basic theme as a template to get going.

    Hey ichl13,

    The license is usually listed with the theme you are thinking to modify. Generally speaking, themes that come with a GPL license can be modified however you'd like once you have obtained it (make sure that they are 100% GPL though. Images are not always GPL even if the theme code is!) Other types of licenses are usually listed wherever you get the theme from. For example, most ThemeForest themes require you to purchase the Extended license if you are wanting to modify the theme for resale.
