Right now I have a website at hosting company A. I will no longer be using hosting company A and switching to bluehost but want to keep the site and domain active while I build it on bluehost. Here is the situation.

I want to build a new wordpress website on bluehost while my existing website is at hosting company A using www dot businessname dot com.

I already have an account with bluehost with other domains. I am wondering what is the best way to build this new website on bluehost while my current website & domain name are on the other hosting company.

Once the new site is built, I would like to bring my domain over and instal on the new wordpress site.

Thanks

Open a folder on bluehost, and put wp files there. If you have some free domain at the moment (domain you're not using), add it to that folder and install wp, but during install check the option not to allow search engines to access your site.

If you don't have a free domain, you'll have to put the files into subfolder of a existing domain. This is little bit trickier, since you'll have to move the files too, and change the paths too, but if you know what you're doing, there won't be problems.

    P.S.
In both cases, don't allow search engines to crawl your site. You can enable it later from the dashboard. Good luck.

I prefer to block the whole world except myself from development sites with htaccess.

      Code:
      order allow,deny
allow from 123.123.123.123 #specify your ip
      deny from all
Rather than fooling around with a different domain to build, you can add the addon domain to your cPanel and edit your hosts file to tell your computer to look at the ip of your hosting at bluehost for your domain instead of depending on the web nameservers.

      sample host file:
      Code:
localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
      #	127.0.0.1 localhost
      123.456.123.456 www.businessname.com
      123.456.123.456 businessname.com
You can get the correct IP from the bluehost cpanel, and when you are done, simply change the nameservers at your registrar, and if you leave the old site up, people will see the old until the change propagates to the new.
