making $$$ with websites

I had asked in another thread whether or not people still made money doing websites (given that it is so easy to install and customize a WP theme).
Do most web developers just market themselves as "Customization People"? I have seen info that one would need to make a profile - on another site, the guy just had pictures of themes (BTW, they were kind of dated) - no profile sites. In other words, nothing that showed he built something from the ground up.
I take it that $350 or thereabouts is the amount for a template customization and not a full site done from scratch (i.e. PSDs -> HTML -> CSS, etc.) Does this make sense? There would be a loss of money immediately since the theme goes from $50-$75.
