Resizing photos in Wordpress

How are you handling the size of your photos. Do you resize them in LightRoom or PhotoShop or do you import them full size and resize them in wordpress somehow?

I have a blog that has a high number of photos that I need to resize on a regular basis. Wondering what the best option is?

Thanks

I always do my resizing in Photoshop before uploading.

But, more important than the physical size, is the size in terms of bits and bytes. In other words, it is just as important to 'Save For The Web' and to compress the HD-size of the image as it is to reduce the physical size.

    Just a thought.

I resize and optimize my images in Photoshop. But any image editor would do. I think it is best to resize and optimize first before uploading to your site. Why upload larger files that will add to the size of your site? It slows down the site because it increases loading times of a page.

I agree with this. I do all my resizing to exact finished dimensions before importing. Nothing slows a site down more than having to resize a 50,000 pixel wide image down to a thumbnail with every visit.

I might have to disagree with this point. Photoshop does an exceptional job of resizing using very complex algorithms to avoid destroying the image. Try that in paint and you'll end up with a pixelated mess with jagged edges and an image that looks horrible. I've never seen anything resize images the way Photoshop does. I would never resize in anything else.

          Bill,

I agree with you. But some do not have or can't afford Photoshop. In that case it is better to recommend a method that though may not be as good as Photoshop is better then doing nothing.

I hear what you're saying and yes that used to be true many years ago but these days you can pick up an earlier version of Photoshop (which does a million more things than you will ever need) for very very cheap. I've only ever used PS7 and CS2 both of which you can pick up for peanuts/free. I'm not sure that "photoshop is too expensive" applies anymore. It's an old myth and people need to get on board. The benefits far out weigh the costs. I can't think of any software that gives as much value as Photoshop.

With wordpress with the exception of some blog images I upload 600x600 saved for web images. This way I ensure that wordpress / woocommerce are only downsizing my images and never stretching. You can go out and search blurry images for wordpress and it is basically all over the place. The ultimate cause is small images, and wordpress stretching them.

I resize the images with Gimp before uploading them.

For resizing multiple images you can use IrfanView's Batch Conversion.

    Both softwares are free.
