Can you change themes if you already have content, posts, pages established? Have six month old site that I want to change the look of.

    Stephanie,

Just upload your new theme to your sites wp-content/themes folder, making sure you upload the whole theme folder.

In your wordpress admin go to the dashboard, select appearance and then choose themes your newly uploaded theme will be there. Click on the theme thumbnail and then choose to activate it.

Once it is activated, choose visit site and Preview your site from within the dashboard panel. Look at your site with the new theme, if you don't like the look of it with the new theme, simply go back to your control panel and reactivate the original one.

You can try this with as many different themes as you want. It won't alter your content at all. The theme is just the outer casing design so to speak.

    Hope that helps.

    Janet

Quick question. Will changing themes affect site maps, google analytics codes and such.
Will I have to re install those?

Your themes and your content are kept in completely different sets of files - your themes are in your WordPress core files and your content in your database.

So changing your theme will not affect your content. Even if you have some problems with a new theme you try (something disappears, for example) you will not have lost your content. It will be a theme problem, nothing to do with your content. Just change your theme back again and everything will 're-appear'.

Themes won't affect site maps or Google Analytics stats, but they can affect your SEO.

This is down to the way they are coded. Themes can also affect things like your site load times - again, based on the way they're coded.

That's one reason why I generally prefer to use Premium (or paid) themes, although there are some very good free themes out there.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

You're right about the SEO part, but a theme that doesn't call the wp_footer or wp_header() could mess up your Google Analytics (since the plugin places the code on your page generally using those hooks). So you should always verify upon changing themes - but this would really be the signs of a poorly coded theme, generally not an issue w/ premium themes like you mention

Changing themes in WordPress is a very easy process, it looks like everyone else has given some great advice so I'll just throw in my 2-cents that they know what they're talking about and to listen to them.
