I'd like to have full control over my site.
Is it worth the time to learn Dreamweaver and HTML/CSS or just go with WP?

I guess my question is....will WP allow me to customize ...on ...or near...the same scale as if I did it myself with Dreamweaver?

Thanks.

    Gdiddy,

It is impossible to compare the two....

Dreamweaver is essentially a pricey Web Design and Development tool...

WordPress is essentially a Content Management System...

From a business perspective, even if you were a Web Development "Guru"..... It would not make sense to "reinvent the wheel" in Dreamweaver.... especially when you look at all the low cost plugins available for WordPress.

WordPress is open source and infinitely customizable....

As for scaling, I would worry about that with WordPress after I had a very popular and profitable business... and WordPress would not be able to handle all the traffic when hosted on a real WP host like WPEngine... It could be several years before you "outgrow" WordPress on WP Engine even if it is a "smash hit."

When I've encountered people "complaining" about WordPress scalability, I immediately follow up with a question asking them about their hosting....

Many end up "confessing" WP is running on a $7 a month "shared hosting" account... Do you honestly expect to run a high traffic web site on an overloaded $7 a month "shared hosting" account?

In my opinion, way too many people waste lots of time worry about "scaling" and other trivial things before they have proven they have a financially viable business....

Look at Groupon...... It started with flyers... Then, "advanced" to being a FileMaker Pro web site.... Finally, it became a "full blown" web site. They proved the concept first... and worried about technology second.

    All the Best,

Go with WordPress, learn HTML PHP & CSS, and you can customize a WordPress site for the appearance you want, and the CMS will allow you to maintain it with much less effort than DW.

I'm a web programmer and I use Dreamweaver. It's costly and I really only use it for the syntax highlighting and auto-complete so I can type less and still be quick.

I think WP is an amazing CMS, but I avoid using it. It's great for generic use but if you need something super customized, build your own.

If you're not a web developer, stick with WP. It's better to get your website up and running soon rather than waiting and learning PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS and Responsive design. You can always learn those languages while your website grows.

      Good luck my friend!

DW & WP look the same from the non-nerd’s perspective, they are in fact very different from each other:

DW is a web design program that you install on YOUR computer. WP is a content management system (basically a bunch of php pages) that you install on your web server – not your home computer.
A website built with Dreamweaver can be uploaded to any web server. When you build a website with WordPress, the website and WordPress become one. You need to have WordPress running to run the website, because the website is dynamically being generated by the WordPress engine.
DW is like a set of power tools, that can speed up the web design process. WP is like a Lego game, where all the pieces are already made, and all you have to do is snap them together.

… Finally, WP is free and DW is a commercial product that cost hundreds of dollars. So you might want to see which one you prefer.

    Hello,
They are the difference between Wordpress and Dreamweaver:-

Dreamweaver is a web design program that you install on YOUR computer. WordPress is a content management system that you install on your web server - not your home computer.

A website built with Dreamweaver can be uploaded to any web server. When you build a website with WordPress, the website and WordPress become one. You need to have WordPress running to run the website, because the website is dynamically being generated by the WordPress engine.

Dreamweaver is like a set of power tools that can speed up the web design process. WordPress is like a Lego game, where all the pieces are already made, and all you have to do is snap them together.

Lastly, WordPress is free and Dreamweaver is a commercial product that cost hundreds of dollars.

I hope you may now clear about the difference between Dreamweaver and Wordpress. Thanks.

If you are simply looking forward to build HTML/CSS website. Then learning dreamweaver and to code will be much more complex than learning WP.

WordPress is free (as in freedom), easy to use and has plenty of resources to learn from. most of these resources are completely free.
Checkout easywpguide.com and download the free PDF book to get started with WordPress.

Next, if you want to have custom look and feel for your website you can download any free or premium themes (there are thousands available).

BONUS: If you want to have complete control over the look and feel of your site (without learning to code) go for themes like Divi by Elegant Themes, or PageLines DMS or Headway.
You simply need to have a basic understanding of a web page's layout and structure. These themes are premium themes but are worth every penny.

For e.g. I have personally used Divi. It's available only to members and a year's membership costs only $69. Divi comes pre loaded with a lot of home page layouts, team/staff page layouts, shop page layout, slider layouts, various header and navigation layouts. With a few clicks you will be able to create a stunning website.

PS: I am not an affiliate for Divi or associated with Elegant Themes. I am a WP theme developer and coach.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!

    Please forget dreamweaver even exists.

Wordpress is a CMS, but ANY web work will be helped by learning basic HTML and CSS (not hard at all, I promise)
