Default Fraudster caught within seconds (funny -- for me)

So here's the situation:

A very legitimate looking affiliate account signed up. High traffic website, whois information matched his application information, including name, phone number, and address, which doesn't happen too often. However, the address that the person signed up with did not match his IP address. So I figured I'd drop him a message on AIM before conducting a phone interview to just check out why the IP address and address listed on the application do not match. I wont include any names for privacy reasons, but the name on the application was certainly an American -- probably Irish-American -- name. So here is our AIM conversation:

(11:31:00 AM) CPATrendPhil: Hey <English name>, how are you?
(11:31:36 AM) fraudster: hi friend
(11:32:19 AM) CPATrendPhil: You just signed up for an affiliate account at CPATrend, just had a quick question.
(11:33:05 AM) fraudster: y
(11:33:15 AM) CPATrendPhil: huh?
(11:34:41 AM) fraudster: can i Join affiliate?
(11:35:02 AM) CPATrendPhil: You already signed up, I just wanted to ask you a question..
(11:35:18 AM) fraudster: sure
(11:35:58 AM) CPATrendPhil: Where did you sign up from?
(11:36:32 AM) fraudster: Chinese students
(11:36:49 AM) CPATrendPhil: Do you speak English?
(11:36:52 AM) fraudster: I have gone through your website and find it very impressive. I thought
me can definitely Improve the revenue from your campaigns.

(11:37:21 AM) fraudster: but my English is bad.
(11:37:29 AM) CPATrendPhil: you never answered my question
(11:37:34 AM) fraudster: i have lot of
customer which best suits your campaigns.

(11:37:47 AM) CPATrendPhil: you still have not answered my question
(11:37:59 AM) CPATrendPhil: (11:35:58 AM) CPATrendPhil: Where did you sign up from?
(11:38:12 AM) fraudster: china
(11:38:26 AM) CPATrendPhil: So <english name> isn't your real name is it?
(11:39:01 AM) fraudster: <Chinese Name>
(11:39:13 AM) CPATrendPhil: So why did you sign up with the name: <english name>, and using all of his information?
(11:39:26 AM) CPATrendPhil: Social Security Number, website, address, etc.
(11:39:46 AM) fraudster: my friend
(11:39:57 AM) CPATrendPhil: Lol
(11:40:05 AM) CPATrendPhil: you're very bad at committing fraud.
(11:40:13 AM) CPATrendPhil: You need some lessons.
(11:40:17 AM) fraudster: why?
(11:40:33 AM) CPATrendPhil: because you're way too easy to spot.
(11:41:08 AM) fraudster: no
(11:41:13 AM) CPATrendPhil: yes.
(11:41:27 AM) fraudster: marketing campaigns:Email, PPC, Facebook
(11:41:35 AM) CPATrendPhil: you're being denied
(11:41:45 AM) CPATrendPhil: you can't sign up with somebody elses information
(11:41:46 AM) CPATrendPhil: that's illegal
(11:41:50 AM) CPATrendPhil: it's called fraud
(11:41:57 AM) CPATrendPhil: you just admitted to doing so..
(11:42:08 AM) fraudster: Unfortunately
(11:42:33 AM) CPATrendPhil: unfortunately you're the worst fraudster I've ever spoken to
(11:42:51 AM) CPATrendPhil: you're never supposed to give yourself away, come on man..
(11:43:00 AM) fraudster: u a bad manager
(11:43:19 AM) CPATrendPhil: You're the first person who's ever said that, so you must be right.
(11:43:33 AM) fraudster: Racial discrimination
(11:43:58 AM) CPATrendPhil: We discriminate against fraudulent affiliates. You just admitted to me that you signed up using fraudulent information, lol.
(11:45:09 AM) fraudster: I would like to Build a healthy relationship with your company. I am
interested in speaking with campaign management team or who handles
campaigns.

(11:45:31 AM) fraudster: but You do not trust me
(11:47:02 AM) CPATrendPhil: Of course I don't trust you. You signed up with a name, address, SSN, phone number, and website that is not yours. How could I trust you?
(11:47:35 AM) fraudster: Do not just saying that a person is a liar
(11:47:39 AM) fraudster: ok?
(11:47:51 AM) CPATrendPhil: What do you mean?
(11:49:02 AM) fraudster: your site to receive China affiliate ?
(11:49:39 AM) fraudster: I have my own two sites
(11:49:40 AM) CPATrendPhil: We accept Chinese affiliates who prove themselves to be legitimate affiliates. You broke the cardinal sin of signing up for affiliate networks.
(11:51:01 AM) fraudster: oh,Very bad thingsO:-)
(11:52:03 AM) fraudster: i work with CJ.com
(11:52:15 AM) CPATrendPhil: so does everybody
(11:52:20 AM) CPATrendPhil: continue working with them
(11:52:45 AM) fraudster: ok , i like them
(11:54:17 AM) CPATrendPhil: great
(11:56:24 AM) fraudster: I would like to Build a healthy relationship with your,,
(11:57:06 AM) CPATrendPhil: It's not happening. You already broke the trust barrier. We cannot work together, sorry.
(11:58:52 AM) fraudster: hehe
(12:00:03 PM) fraudster: Can give you 30% commission:-P
(12:00:37 PM) CPATrendPhil: Go hang out more at blackhatworld.
(12:01:58 PM) fraudster: You're funny
(12:02:08 PM) fraudster: bye
(12:02:10 PM) CPATrendPhil: bye
(12:02:14 PM) CPATrendPhil: thanks for playing

If anybody has spoken with me personally, you know that I typically speak much more professionally on AIM, but sometimes you get some of these guys who are blatantly fraudulent and you just gotta have a bit of fun with them too.

My favorite part is how he called me out for "racial discrimination" and followed it with "I would like to build a healthy relationship with your company."

Some of you may be able to appreciate this!

Thanks for the laugh Phil....have to say my favorite part:

(11:35:58 AM) CPATrendPhil: Where did you sign up from?
(11:36:32 AM) fraudster: Chinese students

I'm curious to find out more about the protective measure you put in place for your network...maybe we can connect and share some ideas that'll strengthen both networks.

Thanks for the laugh

It's true that most networks reject the vast majority of applications from certain Asian countries, but what this guy did is not a good way to change it. He tries to cheat you and then tell you what he did without hesitation?

IMO guys like this just make things even harder for honest Chinese affiliates...

I've been running into plenty of these on AIM lately.

My favorite part is when they sign up with all American details and then reach out to me on AIM speaking completely broken English.

They do my job for me - I don't even have to reach out to them LOL.

Just a thread? Should have it's own forum!

I did a blog post over a year ago where I went through our network pub accounts and pulled out some fun names people had used on their applications:

Gerald Ford - Our 38th President, although dead, apparently found some time to dabble in affiliate marketing.
Randy Jones - Former San Diego Padres Cy Young winner.
Willie Parker - Fast Willie Parker from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Jerry Garcia - The Grateful Dead band member and inspiration for the delicious Cherry Garcia ice cream, which can be found at your local Ben & Jerry's.
David Robinson - "The Admiral". Former center for the San Antonio Spurs...not likely that the guy needs to dive into affiliate marketing to earn a few extra bucks.
Robert Duval - Must have gotten bored of being a famous actor and decided to run some email submits.
Phil Jackson - He's already won several NBA championships and really can't achieve much more in basketball, so looks like he wanted to dominate some biz-op campaigns as well.
Benjamin Franklin - He must have figured out how to get electricity in the afterlife.
Jimmy Carter - Yet another former US President (39th)
Lisa Simpson - I would have preferred Homer.
Phil Collins - He can feel pop ups coming in the air tonight...
Arizona River - Not really a famous person but rather a body of water looking to go with the flow of PPC marketing.
James Bond - Bond...James Bond...
Chad Johnson - The infamous wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals...now legally referred to as Chad Ocho-Cinco.
Harold Kumar - On their search for White Castle, they stumbled upon FluxAds.
Barry Sanders - Former Detroit Lions great running back.
John Stamos - Looks like Uncle Jesse got tired of living with his brother-in-law and his three daughters and wanted to make some commission.

You were mean.

I mean, the guy obviously had worked hard to develop a few good lines to impress you - and then you asked questions out of order. Amazing how popular the "racial discrimination" card is, isn't it? Looks like after throwing that one out he started at the top of his "list of things to say" again.

Poor guy probably rang up his chinese students and complained "it not work".

Sometimes you just gotta play with them a bit. But remember - do not call a liar a liar....is not good when cj affiliate he is being.

I actually really enjoyed this myself:

(11:40:33 AM) CPATrendPhil: because you're way too easy to spot.
(11:41:08 AM) fraudster: no

I've got logs of other conversations with fraudulent affiliates, I'll definitely find some more and post them, as well as post anything that comes up in the future. We can certainly keep this thread going, and I suggest other aff. managers and network owners continue posting some of their stuff as well. But lets try to keep it classy. I've seen some things on youtube where networks are being very rude to fraudulent affiliates, I wont name names, but very unprofessional. Just nice to have some fun every once and a while .

Here's another, this is one of my favorites just because of how ridiculous it is lol:

(11:38:33 PM) fraudster 3: hello. this is jeff. I just wonder how my application's going? I haven't received an e-mail and it's been more than one day.
(11:48:59 PM) cpatrendphil: Hey, isn't your name Alan? Your account has unfortunately been denied, sorry to inform you of that.
(11:50:31 PM) fraudster 3: ok
(11:50:34 PM) fraudster 3: thanks anyway
(11:50:43 PM) fraudster 3: actually, Jeff is my nickname
(11:50:47 PM) cpatrendphil: Sorry man. Best of luck elsewhere.
(11:50:53 PM) fraudster 3: ok

Who knew that Jeff was short for Alan?

If you write a WSO filled with conversations from fraudsters, I'd be your first buyer!

Translators are sooo bad sometimes its ridiculously funny.

Here's a question...has anybody ever applied with the word fraud or fraudster as their name? That would be hilarious

I think applying as Bernie Madoff would get you approved any day of the week (Charles Ponzi might also be a good option but I'm not sure).

Fraudsters, yes even fraudsters have a reason for being....well, frauds I guess. (as long as they get caught, that is) Had it not been for this guy I never would have found this wonderful collection of CPA Network Signatures all-in-one-place.

I have a 19 and a 23 year old, one 1st year and 4th college and for the life of me I can't figure out why they don't show more interest in supplement their incomes. I'm sure if they found something they like to to, that would change.

My question: Would my 23 year old's blog, AudioVerdict.com get approved? Is there anything that needs changing for these offers? I know very little about CPA offers but I've heard they are all the rage if you can get approved and know how to drive targeted traffic.

Also, if I ask a question on a WSO from last January will I get in trouble? I did that once and got banned for 3 days for bringing up - bumping an old WSO which at the time, I didn't even know what bumping or WSO was or bother to check the dates. What's the deal with that?

I don't mean to go off in another direction, so if this is in the wrong thread, let me know and I'll move it. Thanks, Leah

Good job mate!

At least the fraudster will never attempt to abuse your affiliate network. I really hate fraud-type affiliates that abuse or violate the TOS of the affiliate or CPA program. No matter what tactics they have, they will always lose. Professional affiliate and CPA programs are too smart to investigate and with common sense too.

Heads up for that!

Lol thanks everybody. In this scenario, this was one of the easiest people to catch. Anybody in my position would've seen this from talking to the guy for a minute. It's the more intelligent, proper-english-speaking fraudsters that are harder to catch. That's what takes the real investigation (stuff that wouldn't be posted here because it's not nearly as funny).

I know there's a lot of network owners/affiliate managers here, if anybody else has any funny conversations like this, lets keep the thread rolling! In a relatively serious business, it's nice to be able to have some fun as well!

Thanks tofiq, the beauty of working with a quality affiliate network is that generally speaking, they weed out a heavy majority of fraudulent or unqualified leads.

Here's a bit more to keep the thread rolling:

(11:40:34 PM) CPATrendPhil: Hmm, I'm taking a look at your account and it appears that your signup location is different from your home address.
(11:40:40 PM) CPATrendPhil: Do you have an explanation for this?
(11:40:52 PM) fraudster: ?
(11:42:20 PM) CPATrendPhil: You signed up from China, yet you claim that you live in Florida.
(11:45:36 PM) CPATrendPhil: Are you there?
(12:02:10 AM) fraudster: Yes Im from China
(12:02:30 AM) CPATrendPhil: So why did you sign up claiming you're from Florida in the US?
(12:03:13 AM) fraudster: I thought you not accept International people
(12:03:20 AM) fraudster: so I use a US info
(12:03:23 AM) fraudster: :-)
(12:03:23 AM) CPATrendPhil: You have all fraudulent information.
(12:03:54 AM) CPATrendPhil: I'm going to go ahead and reject your account now, sorry.
(12:04:02 AM) fraudster: k

My favorite part of this one is that after telling me he's committing fraud, he gave the cute smiley face, which almost made me approve him! -- Also check out the timestamps! lol

Default Another way to catch fraudster

Another funny story from me just an hour ago:

A man apply to our network, his IP is 123.162.129.248 and his address is:
xxx coluso RANCHO SANTA, MARGARITA, CA, US 92688

I test his sign up location and found out it is in China. I phoned him to interview (just 4 fun cos I know it is about 95% fraud) & see the phone switch to voice mail immediately.

We do interview all affiliates so any affiliate with non existing phone will be considered as fraud and got rejected.

I post an image, just for illustration. All privacy reserved, affiliates private information will not be shared in any case.

I absolutely agree.

One of my biggest passions is entepreneurship and one thing I have noticed is that the most successful of businesses are those that work at all levels of the value chain. To make a business work, vendors, customers, clients, distributors, suppliers, merchants, advertisers, everybody in the value chain need to be better off because of working with that business.

In the case of CPA, the business model as a whole works extremely well when things are done right. Affiliates use their set up skills to get good leads and make good money from selling these leads to the merchants who make good money by monetizing these leads. The networks make good money by coordinating the efforts to maximize the potential of the affiliates and the merchants. Everybody has a role and everybody makes out at the end of the day if things are done right.

When these fraudsters step into the picture, it messes with the harmony and equilibrium of the relationships in the value chain. Merchant dont get value from bad or fake leads and dont want to pay the networks who dont want to pay the affiliates. Overall, nobody makes out, except in the chance that the fraudster doesnt get caught (this time around).

Its also important to remember that advertisers and networks can also lead to the collapse of the value chain as well if they are doing sketchy and unethical things that dont provide value. Its not always at the affiliate end where the breakdown in the chain occurs. Just something to think about

90% of the people applying to CPA networks are fraud. That is a fact.

Rainbow Blvd, PO box's in NYC, Oakland CA and many other areas are the addresses these guys use.

A good portion of that 90% are applying with the intentions of using stolen CC's to buy products through CPA links to get the commission. By the time the network or advertiser catch on its usually to late.
