Arrow Frank Kern's - Good Karma List Machine

I was really keen to install and implement Frank Kern's Free - Good Karma List Machine Script but as i browsed the comments on Frank's website I came across the following comment:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Excellent product except not useful for Europe. The EU recently passed a law that forbid rewarding people that recommend your product to others by email. I guess they call it abuse of the electronic messaging systems. I personally call it a way to close free enterprise and marketing creativity. What can you do? Move I guess. Frank, is the apartment besides yours still free? So we can share out Internet connection! "
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Being relatively new to IM and Not wanting to break any laws; I thought I would post this in the Forum in an attempt to confirm whether this law exists or not; and too provide a heads up to other EU marketers.

Can anyone then confirm or otherwise deny that this EU law exists?

Many Thanks
Rodopi

I've never heard by this EU law. I'm also interested if it exist and apply only to European Union or all Europe.

Sounds like a load of BS to me, you can do what ever you want, for as long as one abides by the CANNSPAM regulations.

BTW, that script ONLY works if you're with Aweber... sucks for those who are with icontact or getresponse.

In the UK, there is a constant stream of misinformation about the EU. People don't like the faceless, bureaucratic, undemocratic system in Brussels and so tend to believe any tale with a "1984" tone to it.

This sounds to me like a distorted version of the recent FTC ruling. If you're interested in the product, I wouldn't let this put you off.

Even if it were true, how would they go about policing it? I'm in Paris and this doesn't faze me at all.

BTW does anyone know how to adapt the script for GetResponse rather than eWeber?

I was surprised they didn't throw their affiliate links for Aweber into this promo. Would of added a ton of $$$. And I would of thought if people are going to sign up they wouldn't mind throwing them the affiliate commission.

Frank knows that GEEKS only buy things is they really have to have them and they can't find ANY way around the purchase, but present them with anything that smells a little like an affiliate link and they will one of a sudden rather chose to be eaten by a beast than pay their way to safety. (geeks clean all their cookies before going to the Aweber website just to make sure that nobody gets a commission from their purchase)

I hear ya and agree. I just figured they'd provide two links.. a non affiliate link and a affiliate link that tells people they will get paid if they use it.

Most would be more than happy to use their link after the amount of good stuff they've given away. Somehow I think they'll do okay anyway

I am trying to install the script but it says Failure, please check your information and try again. I double / triple checked my database info and it is 100% accurate. Franck said it had been developed to work with BlueHost, any idea why it may not work on my host ? Thanks.

Thanks for your replies guys.

I think I'll give it a try; just peer over my shoulder every now and then ;-)

I'm with Hostgator; don't really want to switch hosting so will attempt installation on there.

Thanks again.

I couldn'd get it to work on my dedicated server either.
The program uses the Smarty Templates system, which can be temperamental at times.
There also seems to be quite a few permissions issues to solve.
So, I guess Blueshost is the easy option if you weant to use this script.

One other thing:
AWeber says that "Tell A Friend" type scripts
"are not in any way permitted for use with AWeber."
(see Tell A Friend Forms Are Not Opt-In )

Wonder how they regard the use of Frank's script, as it uses AWeber to send out the original message, which then diverts to the Tell A Friend script?

cheers,
Eric G.

Yes right, I had to change the permissions first to install it on my host. Then I couldn't connect to the database so I just created an account at bluehost.

As to this Aweber info... now that I have opened an account at BH just for this, I guess i'll just pretend I don't know...

Good Q, cos it's a bit of a thin line.

Cos really people sign up to receive either a) information, or b) a free product, so what does it matter if you (the admin) referred them, or others referred them?

hmmmm

I agree and i did it quite a few times myself even if it doesn't make sense:

1/ You don't lose any money
2/ If you purchase, doesn't the person who referred you diserve a little something too ?

Some time ago I was very happy about an offer so I kept the cookie because I was grateful to the guy and wanted him to be rewarded for that. A couple weeks later, I did clear a cookie because the product I was buying had been promoted to me through email spam and I hate this. It was a good product but still, this kind of promotion doesn't diserve any reward (it would be encouraging it anyway).

The law DOES exist in the UK - it's been around for a couple of years.

It's widely ignored though.

Basically it states you can't offer an incentive for getting people to tell their friends. The Information Commissioner thinks that means people will spam their friends just to get the free stuff (they have a point)

No idea if it's Europe-wide or just UK.

I see a couple people already mentioned using Getresponse. I would like to be contacted if anyone has any good ideas how to modify it. Not a programmer, but I can cut & paste. There must be a fairly easy way to change it, since it's such a simple script.

Can't believe he paid $12K for it. They must have seen him coming. He could have probably got it a lot cheaper using one of his aliases. But, to him, I guess that's just pocket change.

The script installs easily on hostgator.

The only problem now is after you log out of admin after installing it, you cannot log back in again. user and passwords fail and there is no, reset your password link.

So far the problem has gone unchecked and no one knows if and when a fix is coming.

Viral Friend generator has been around a few years and no complaint ever came up about that.
I suppose we can just ask the founder of Aweber, since he is a member on this forum.
I'll post him a PM directing him to this topic and we'll clear it up.

I don't agree with the TAF opinion at Aweber, but they're entitled to it. I'm still wondering how something can be called Good Karma if it doesn't work after you install it (you can't get back in the admin panel) and there is zero documentation now that the video has been taken down.

Well this Good Karma List Machine generated a lot of traffic for Frank and now that he made all the money on his new launch the free tool he gave away is being ignored it seems.

But the argument will be, why complain it was FREE, right?

It would be a nice little script to use to build a list though, its just too bad it don't work and there is no update or any mention of it being on the radar for being updated.

He will be releasing it again soon as the launch is over. He had a new security patch created for it along with a patch to correct some other problems.
I downloaded the video, so I'll upload them and give you a link hopefully in a few hours.

Just a heads up ZERO. Your video link is unavailable on Megaupload.

Did you get confirmation from Frank that he is going to put this back up or is that speculation about the fix and re-release?

BTW: thanks for the info on the install instructions etc.

Its working fine for me.

Also, he said so himself in the karma list machine security alert topic in the main marketing forum. He's probably gonna do it as soon as List Control closes down.

I am going to delete it off of my server and reinstall to see if it clears up the admin log in problem.

I will have to make sure to completely finish before logging out this time.

Thanks

Are there any rights limitations on this? i.e. could one have their own programmer modify it or were there restrictions on it?

I've installed it on Kiosk servers. You just have to know what file permissions need to be changed. As for the rights, you only have the rights that were expressly given to you which means personal use only and you do not have the right to edit the code in any way.

Well I guess he just followed the simple reciprocity thing :

If I sign up to Aweber using his referral link, then I'll feel relieved from the huge gift he's just offered to me. He makes ten bucks.

If I can't reciprocate this way, then the only way I don't feel guilty to use the awesome tools and tricks... is by buying List Control.
He makes two grand.

Sounds like an easy choice to me

I wiped out the database and deleted the files from my server and then reinstalled.

It worked but then I couldn't not paste any html into the front page box. I logged out to see what would happen and sure enough. No way back in.

It failed again. So I guess it is just a waiting game until the working version is released.

Pretty disappointed in something that was pumped up as being coded for $12,000 but then again it was FREE right?

That's a good point, plus it demonstrates an abundance mindset. i.e. If he is throwing away all the affiliate commissions he could have earned from these then he must have the skills to pay the bills...

I managed to lost the .zip I downloaded whene I went to install it however with all this talk of errors and laws against it perhaps it was for the best!

I installed List Machine and spent 4-5 hours getting everything set up the way I wanted it. I tried to log in the next day and the password I set up didn't work.

I thought it might be a fluke, so I removed everything my server, deleted the MySQL database related to the install, and re-installed. Well... I did that 4 times and kept having the same damn problem with this “$12,000” piece of software.

I e-mailed Frank’s support a few minutes ago. Let's see if I get any kind of response.

Hey Steve - I have the exact same problem. My client wants to use the script and I haven't been able to get it to work due to the login problem (and lost 2 hours in the process). Could you let us know if Frank's support sends you anything useful?

The other Frank Kern Listmachine thread got deleted, but it had several others reporting the same login problem.

I would leave it until well after the launch. If you didn't buy the course, you can't expect prompt support for free software while they're right in the middle of one of the biggest IM launches of the year!

If you DID buy the course, an updated and improved version of the script (with additional features) will be made available to you very soon.

Here's the support manager's response:

"Yes, we've heard this from quite a few people, so we're having our programmer work on a fix - as soon as it's ready, we'll release it. Sorry for the hassle."

I absolutely would expect support for free software that is given out during one of the biggest launches of the year. How can you say "I have techniques that will fix your list building challenge" and one of those techniques doesn't even work properly? I don't know about you, but if I didn't know who Frank was I sure woundn't have confidence in buying his stuff after losing hours of work from software that doesn't work properly. It's a credibility issue for me.

And if he or someone in his company never got back to me about it, what would make me think he's got the customer's best interest in mind?

The program uses the Smarty Templates system, which can be temperamental at times.
There also seems to be quite a few permissions issues to solve.
So, I guess Blueshost is the easy option if you weant to use this script.

One other thing:
AWeber says that "Tell A Friend" type scripts
"are not in any way permitted for use with AWeber."
(see Tell A Friend Forms Are Not Opt-In )

Wonder how they regard the use of Frank's script, as it uses AWeber to send out the original message, which then diverts to the Tell A Friend script?

cheers,
Eric G.
Frank's form is just fine, in no way does it have the user input his FRIENDS email addresses and send out more emails from the server to get the friends to sign up.

So My Subscribers Can’t Refer Others to My List?

They can, and we do recommend that you take advantage of referral/word-of-mouth marketing, but you need to do it in a way that still gets everyone’s permission before you start emailing them.
What we recommend as an alternative is adding a section to your messages that:
  • Encourages Subscribers to Pass the Message to Others
  • Tells People How to Sign Up to Your List
That way, your subscribers can forward your messages themselves to their friends, rather than generating a message sent by you through some sort of form.

I was going to release a patch (on behalf of myself), but I found out that most of the code was most likely ripped off commercial software .. so no I'm not going to release one

Personally I don't think anyone has the right to even use it ...

Ahum, just a few lines before you showed that you DID get a response.

Don't expect a magic fix to come within a day when it's a big script and the whole company is busy with a product launch. They should do their best for customers and prospects, but I expect anyone to put customers on the first place - prospects second.

It's the simple fact of life that you have to set priorities!

List control is shutting down today isn't it? I'd probably expect to see the patch being released sumtime in the weekend.

I also had a problem with the front page form field in the back end not allowing you to paste in html.

It kept stripping out the code and just pasting in the text.

Hi folks,

I never realized that I'd be searching for one of Frank Kern's videos as I did his good karma list machine one but I really wanted to see how to setup to set it.

When I originally watched the video, I thought cool and that I would get back to it but didn't know he'd be so quickly pull it off.

Luckily I found the script and got it installed on my host but I'm stuck at the Aweber configs. I'm new to all of this and just got Aweber a few days ago so what are values for:

Aweber Merchant ID:
Aweber Merchant Form:

??

Glad I found this forum as well during my search.. looks like this will be an amazing resource!

Cheers!
