You can do mediabuys as well, Pulse360 is a great place to get targeted high quality leads. I think quite a few people do media buying, I haven't done it yet, mostly PPV and PPC lol.

I think they are Warriors using all traffic sources - I'm sure there's plenty of media buy experts kicking around here.

It is because PPC and PPV are more effective or less costly than media buys?

To be honest, the most successful affiliates that I know use paid traffic (PPC, PPV and/or media buys). So do I. However, it doesn't mean that you can't make money with free traffic. I think that the big bucks are in the paid advertising systems, but you can do very well with SEO and other free traffic sources. It can take a bit longer, but it's definetely possible (and a good alternative for people who need to make their budget to take the paid route).

Media buys are often more expensive to start, the initial deposit can be $5000-$25000, sometimes more, where as the others as low as $20 (maybe even lower)

In terms of actual numbers of warriors, I think its probably a pretty healthy split between paid and free. In terms of dollar earnings, there is probably more in paid, but you have to realize that earnings are skewed. There are people making enormous amounts with paid traffic but in pure numbers, my bet would be that there is probably an even split between those people making money and those people losing money with paid traffic. The amount of newer an intermediate marketers getting into paid traffic, losing money and then quitting is pretty high.

For example PPC is a tricky beast and has been and will be trickier and tougher into the future (in my opinion and talking about the main PPC platforms here). Most newbies who go into PPC-CPA will lose a lot of money. Its just how it is. Even the most experienced PPCers lose money at first and sometimes even with all the experience it still takes a long time to turn a campaign positive. I do PPC and some of my biggest campaigns have been PPC so I know how good it can be but also how brutal it can be.

Paid traffic has its place but I strongly urge people with less than a grand in investment capital to start doing free traffic for a while before they venture into paid. While you learn the ropes and learn how to track and all that good stuff, dont blow your money on paid traffic.

I just hate seeing so many newer marketers hear that there is so much opportunity in paid traffic and then they lose everything and walk away. It happens to a lot of people.

Getting to six figures with purely free traffic is very doable with internet marketing and CPA marketing and I personally think that for the vast majority of newbies, free traffic is where you should stick for a few months at least. Free traffic is the most underrated traffic because its not as sexy.

Of course everybody has their own opinion, the previous were just mine

OK let me take a stab at this and give you my experience with it and see if I can answer your question.

First I use all traffic methods including SEO.

I started with PPC , first with google search, then google display network, then Yahoo and Bing. I tested with google first as that is where most traffic is. Also Google display network has the best reporting for where your ads are showing, and what it will cost. You can work out costs of both ppc and cpm tests.

Next was CPV. Traffic Vance was first, then once I had that working, I used some of the smaller cpv traffic sources.

Media Buys I only started using once I had perfected my sales funnel, and I had at least $5000 for testing. I also did direct buys with certain sites that were doing well for me on Google content network ( now display network )

With media buys you need to know your target customer, and also have some idea of what your conversion rates are. In other words know your numbers first.

There is no point paying $5 cpm, if your offer is only earning $2cpm.

PPC and CPV the spend is easier to manage and test. You need bigger budgets for media buys, even if you are doing it on a small scale, and going direct to sites you still need a decent amount of cash.

So here is my 2 cents for you.

If you do not currently have a product making you money, or don't know your metrics, you should not even be thinking about media buys.

Don't be taken in by people telling you about big returns. Understand its bigger risks too.

Media buying typically takes quite a bit more work then PPC or PPV.

Most affiliates utilize the PPC/PPV networks and they can have a campaign up fairly quickly. You can direct link on a lot of sources (like Facebook and PPV) and you don't need banner creatives.

With media buying - you have a few routes to choose from. You can utilize direct site media buying and pay a flat rate or a CPM directly to a website who has traffic that you want or you can use the media buying networks. The networks are typically a lot more expensive - and testing a media buy can cost more then most affiliates like to spend.

I personally use social media PPC, PPV and direct to site media buying. I prefer direct site buys because you can find some really cheap rates from website owners that don't really know what the traffic is worth. You can buy the ad at a flat rate for the entire month and get some nice ROI on it.

Media buying isn't talked about as much either - so that could have an affect on the amount of people doing it.

If your advertisement has a STRONG CALL TO ACTION, what begins as a PPC campaign could become a media buy. To find out which will work for your campaign; set up a PPC campaign that has a strong call to action (gets them to your destination) and monitor the impressions and clicks. If you are having a very low amount of clicks / impression; you would assume that there is something wrong with your campaign... But if your call to action is strong enough, yo may be seeing conversions without the clicks on the PPC platform- and it then can be viewed as a Media Buy, because you are earning from your IMPRESSIONS.

Before starting PPC, PPV, I prefer SEO. Because you learn about targeted traffic from Search Engines.

That is all well and good, but the guy is asking a question about media buys and paid traffic, not SEO.
