Toolbar Offers - How Do They Make Money?

Hi, I have seen several toolbar offers on networks lately and I am wondering if anyone here knows the business model behind it...

How can they afford to pay over $2.5 for an install? I know that these toolbars are designed to alter the settings on someones browser so that it shows ads on the sides or in the search results...

What I am wondering is...are the advertisers the owners of the ad networks and therefor get paid by their advertising customers or are they getting the ads to be shown from other places and getting paid per click...like adsense.

Can someone please explain how it works?

    There is one company behind a lot of the toolbar offers out there. The networks are not paid based on the performance of the ads displayed via the toolbars..they get paid on a cost-per-install basis just like you. All the money from the other ads goes to the owner of the toolbar offer.
