Spinning Your Content

I want to talk about spinning. Spinning is a major component of this strategy because it allows us to create content that is based on the high quality content we wrote for our landing pages but that can be used on other sites to create backlinks and build authority for your site.

The idea is very simple.

When you sit down and write a high quality article, you are producing a valuable piece of intellectual property. Why spend another few hours (or hundreds of dollars) writing more content when you already have quality content in hand?

So, directly after writing an article, we will generate spin tags that allow us to create multiple versions of the same article.

But, you’re probably thinking, spinning is supposed to be dangerous – a sure way to get yourself banned from Google, right?

The thing about spinning is that it is immensely powerful, but only when done properly. You cannot just replace any word with another. It has to be done carefully and only the highest quality spun articles can be used.

Additionally, I strongly suggest you don’t use spun content on your own website, at least not of the same content already on your site. Remember, we want original, useful information. Spun content is the exact same information in a different shell.

Which is why it will make perfect fodder for article marketing and web 2.0 sites.

How Spinning SHOULD Work

Do NOT use an auto spinner. This is the kind of cruddy content that gives spinning a bad name. Also, do NOT use spun articles on your website. This will only water down the quality of content on your site and make it harder to rank (if not impossible).

You want your site to perform well, and be interesting to the people who get there. It costs more (or takes more time), but it is well worth it.

That out of the way, spinning is immensely powerful. So I want you to know how to do it right.

I have also taken steps to create spun versions of colloquial phrases and turns of phrase that wouldn't make sense if you just replaced key words. Here’s an example:

“open your eyes to”

This is a colloquial turn of phrase that means to inform someone of something that will give them new insight on a subject of interest. We say “open your eyes to” instead because it sounds more casual and makes its point to nearly anyone with a basic understanding of the language.

But, if I spun that sentence without changing it for context, it could ready oddly:

“expose your perception to”

It doesn't really make sense. So, instead, I provided alternate versions of that entire four word phrase:
  • give you insight into
  • reveal to you
  • present

These all work in context to replace the original phrase and don’t hurt the meaning of the sentence. This is an immensely important aspect of spinning an article and one that many people overlook, and a major reason why auto spinners are not useful.

Google may not have a human brain tapped into its algorithms quite yet, but it’s getting closer to emulating our understanding of language and that would not make sense to Google.

So, we need to be careful.

When spinning a sentence, concrete nouns used in plain context can be swapped out for synonyms. Guide can be replaced with “resource”, “compendium” or “reference” because they all mean roughly the same thing.

Just click on any word in your article after pasting it into the software interface and you’ll get this popup

Choose what fits the context and you’re set.

This is very valuable for headlines, subheadlines and CTAs that you cannot afford to simply replace with synonyms. They need to make sense or they won’t work in context. This method ensures that is the case.

That’s a lot of options for publishing. Now, the review itself will not be useful for article marketing. Sites like Ezine Articles, the largest and most valuable of the article directories, don’t allow reviews.

But, web 2.0 sites like Squidoo, Tumblr, Blogspot and Hub Pages allow whatever you want, so these can be immensely valuable in those settings. Here are some more tips for how to do this:

Content Hub – Create a hub with 5-10 articles spun out from your other marketing materials on Squidoo or on a tumblr style Web 2.0 blog platform. You will create a following quickly and generate a lot of interest in your content if you do this frequently and build on it over time.

Monster Review – Create a monster review – of more than 3,000 words and post it to these sites. Content volume can have a major impact on high PR domains. It will rank quickly for that topic and can drive traffic back to your site immediately. Since these pages are linking to you too, it is likely your site will rank ahead of them.

Video Hybrid – Create a video hybrid based on your spun content. Use the spun content and break it up with video commentary on the site.
PowePoint Review Transformation – Generate PowerPoint presentations out of your spun content and record it real quick (or pay someone on Fiverr to do so) and post it on Web 2.0 sites.

The bottom line is that spinning is a powerful tool – one you can use effectively to generate massive amounts of content quickly.

There will be a large upfront investment of time of course.

It takes roughly 20 minutes to spin 500 words of text if you are experienced and do it quickly. For a 1,500 word review, you’re looking at an hour of spinning. But once it has been spun, you can reuse the review dozens of times with a Copyscape proof final article.

You can even have someone review your article for $2-$3 if you find a good, low cost editor who can remove anything that simply doesn’t make sense. At first, I recommend editing your own spun content – you will eventually get the hang of spinning the content out to not have any major problems, but at first, you may have some issues which make it harder to do.

Here are some common issues that pop up in spun content:

Proper Noun Confusion – Proper nouns should never be spun, at least not out of context.

Reuse of the Same Word – If your original article uses a synonym in the same sentence you risk having redundancies. So, if I say something like “This report is an amazing guide” and then use “report” as a synonym in spintax for “guide” and vice versa, I risk having articles that read as “this report is an amazing report” and “this guide is an amazing guide”. It’s sloppy, so avoid having multiple nouns referencing the same thing in the same sentence, at least not with the same synonyms in their spin tags.

Run Ons – If you replace single words with longer clauses, you risk creating longer, convoluted sentences. Try to match every phrase you replace with a similar length or shorter clause.

Subheadlines – Don’t spin individual words in subheadlines. It can ruin the context or make it harder to understand the purpose of the subheadline. At the same time, don’t keep more than 3 words the same in a single line. You risk having too many matches in Copyscape if you do this. So, either shorten your subtitles or find creative ways to spin them.

Check Your Thesaurus – A single word, like “open” can have dozens of different meanings.

As you can see, there are a LOT of different ways to use the word “open” so make sure to delineate through context what your spun versions mean.

I’m Not Making It Harder

Right now, you’re probably rubbing your eyes and wondering why I’m torturing you with all these rules about spinning.

The truth is that most gurus try to oversimplify this process and they get their students in trouble because of it. I know you want a quick and easy solution, but you also want one that works.

It is 100% worth spending the extra 30-60 minutes figuring out how to spin your article correctly and ensuring every spun version you have works exactly as intended instead of having spun copies that are nonsensical and set off all sorts of alarms for Google’s spiders.

Do it correctly and spinning provides immensely value – I highly recommend you do it correctly.
