Choosing a domain name!

Who would have thought how difficult it would be to choose a domain name these days especially with all the newly available extensions!

I am working around the words "affiliate Marketing" but I think that's a bit too broad? Should I prefix with my name or go way off the mark and try some other angle?

Once again thanks in advance for your expertise.

The domain name will define compliance of your website to the chosen subject. The name has to be the shortest, but at the same time as much as possible informative. If you experience difficulties with the choice of a domain name, then it is possible to address marketing specialists.

of course, why not ? you change your domain name any time. and if you want to keep your old domain name. then, just redirect the new domain name from the old domain name.

In courses on seo we were told that the domain name should be short so that this person could easily remember it.

Having interviewed many founders and heard the same thing over and over again, I'll share with you the #1 domain issue I've heard:

Choose a domain that is easy to remember and spell. Don't get fancy. eg. a domain that ends on an "eee"-sound...do you spell it with an i? or an ee? If you have to explain it, don't pick it.

If you have to spell it out for people to know where to go, it's bad.

Given that most of the two and even three word domains you would normally pick have been snatched up already by those wishing to sell them at a profit someday, you may have to add "my" or "the" or some other simple word to the front to find a claimable domain.

Otherwise, you'll have to invent a word or name: and now you're back to the above issue.

Make it straightforward, but I wouldn't worry about it being too long.

I'd not give it too much thought Gary.

I never followed a blog or site based mainly on the name. If I love the content, I follow it. More about service and connecting with people and less about a catchy name.

Go with something simple and add a personalized word or 2. I see many highly successful blogging buddies who picked unconventional names. This crowd developed skills, created helpful content and built bonds with top bloggers; all cornerstones of blogging success.

If you need the domain for branding only then other extensions are fine. If you want to rank it for organic traffic, then be careful with the newer extensions. The .com .net and .org will be better for that.

Also, don't be forgettable. Brand yourself and don't be generic. People will remember sites like affiliateninja, thewealthyaffiliate, myaffiliateskills as opposed to something like affiliatemarketingtom.

    Your Own Domain, Your Brand!

Rule #1: Don't worry about keywords in your domain.
Keywords or how much traffic the keywords in your domain get DO NOT matter. As you build out your website, it is the content and individual pages/posts that will be targeting keywords and getting rankings.

Rule #2: Aim to get a .com domain. These have the tendency to rank the best.

Rule #3: Avoid "dashes" in your domain. Domains with dashes can definitely still rank, but they are not as good.

Rule #4: Choose a "brandable" domain.
Be brandable and be as hip as you like. You want a domain that you love and that resonates with you. At the end of the day your domain is going to be the long term brand for your website and you have to like it.

If buying a new domain name your best bet is to buy an expired domain name with a pa of 50 or more. Now you have just put yourself way way ahead of the game. Do you want to wait 6 months to a year to rank for anything. Or would you like to start ranking after your first article. Its a no brainer really. You buy an expired domain or better yet scrape one up yourself register it. Then you point all 404 errors to the main page with a redirect so all old backlinks now send there juice to your homepage.

Re: consistency and lengths of social media handles, domain name, branding.

Business is Fake Name Vape. I have both @fnvape & @fakenamevape on the big social media platforms and own fnvape.com & fakenamevape.com.

Not the actual name, but same 6 chars vs. 12 chars. E.g. @xxVape @XxXxxxxxVape

Should I use abbreviated domain name and social media handles (6 chars), or full brand name (12 chars)? Should I try to have consistency if possible and use the same choice for both store URL and social media handles?

The full 12 characters FAKEnameVape.com and @fakenamevape seem like the right choice, because they are actually the name of the company, store, brand. I was led to believe fnvape.com preferable because of brevity, not just for organic search SEO but my understanding is that long domains allow for typos when customer hasn't previously visited your website.

(A lot of my local marketing relies on print flyers on college bulletin boards and Mass mail. Going to add a QR code to avoid typos issue).

Can anybody make an argument why i should just stick with the short 6 character version as opposed to spelling out the entire brand name?

You should check some points before select the domain name.

    1. Hear/Spellability: When we say our website name it should be clearly audible. it should not repeatedly spell it out.

    2. Memorability: Ensure your domain name is as easy to remember as possible, because, if people can't remember your domain name, how would they remember to visit the website or tell a friend about it?

    3. Associations: Make sure your domain name raise the right kind of feeling in your audience

Domain zones are conditionally divided into two groups - thematic and territorial. For thematic zones there were historically established purposes: com - a zone for commercial organizations (now the subject is not respected and properly called a zone of "general purpose"), info - information resources, biz - sites of commercial structures and many others, whose purpose is intuitively understandable ( net, travel, pro, mobi, name). Territorial zones are targeted to residents of a certain country, less often the terrain and, in general, to speakers of the appropriate language and culture: us - USA, uk - United Kingdom etc. I think this can at least slightly align you

    Hi Gary,

Choosing a domain name can really be tough. So I've listed out some points to consider in an attempt to make it easier.

    1. As mentioned previously, keep the name as short as possible. Under 8 letters is usually recommended, according to Hubspot.

    2. If you can stick to a (dot)com, do it. At the very most, you can use a (dot)co. This is mainly because the dotcom has been around forever, and it looks much more trustworthy.

    3. Make it brandable and use it as a marketing tool - e.g AF247(dot)com and use a slogan revolving around Affiliate Marketing 247.

    4. Be creative or innovative - Come up with catchy domain names, e.g. AffiliateMarketerr

    5. Still no luck? Break the rules - try something no one will try, such as iDontKnowAF

    6. IF you plan on having a social media presence, check beforehand if the business name/domain name is available for use on socialmedia platforms. One way todo that quickly is using namechk.com

Ultimately, the domain name should be complimentary to your business goal/mission, and hence complement your slogan. I hope this helps.

    Cheers

It is always best to have a domain name that is unique catchy and short compared to one that has the generic keyword.for example u can do away with having affiliate word in the domain name. The best companies in todays date all have a unique one word (mostly)domain name.eg.Uber,Zillow,etc

Choosing a domain name is similar to choosing a company name -- it requires a lot of thought and consideration. Your domain name is your identity on the web; you want to make sure you choose a name that not only fits your business, but is also easy to find and promote.
    1. Make it easy to type
    2. Keep it short
    3. Use keywords
    4. Target your area
    5. Avoid numbers and hyphens
    6. Use an appropriate domain name extension

Things to consider when choosing your domain name:
    • Make it pronounceable and easy to type
    • Keep it short, but not too short
    • Do research - are there other websites with a similar name, can the name be used internationally (check the meaning in other popular languages)
    • Do't make it too narrow - don't limit your options. Even if your niche is narrow now, maybe you will decide to expand in the future
    • Don't use unpopular domain name extension (otherwise people will keep adding ".com"

Choosing a domain name doesn't have to be tough. All you have to focus on is the content you put inside that domain.

Long story short, I had a domain named wriststyler and I started thinking I would use it to sell watches. Later understood its overly saturated niche and I would be striving to make sales from it.

Without changing the domain name I started to put in different products in my store, starting from women's makeup niche to children's toy.

I was shocked to see people still bought from my store and it ended up making $100,000 in 2 months.

Choosing a domain name doesn't have to be complicated. Just start taking action with whatever you can.

But do keep in mind the niche has to be generic, else you would struggle in your initial stages for promoting the products or services.

And now that Google doesn't give weight to the domain name that much, you can still rank a website having "zebra" in it, and selling SEO services in Connecticut. Hope that helps...

If you are concerned about domain just because of traffic and revenue generation by business,
    then you should understand
Your business not only depend on domain but several other factor-
1.first is how useful your content to user. content/service quality and uniqueness matters alot.
    2.how you promote your website.
3.relevant extensions. people always get confused with extension e.g.- If you have chosen 'domain.xyz'
and competitor has chosen 'domain.com' then he might get more business because people commonly assume extensions as .com

And there are many more factors which can affect business.
but when choosing domain try to keep it simple so that it can be easy to remember.
otherwise choose any domain, keep seo of your website up to date. so when user enter query related to your business
your website will always rank on first page of SERP.
So in short try to focus on service you provide rather than domain name.( To clarify doubt assume amazon.com, neither relevant to e-commerce business nor used fancy extensions but still generating handsome revenue because of service they provide.)

When you choose the domain, remember the below things.

First, you need to decide what kind of domain you want to choose.
    1). Newly Fresh Domain or
    2). Expired domain

I want to suggest to go with expired domain because of an expired domain has a more value as well that domain also has a past quality trust and domain authority as well.

But wait, you have to analyze expired domain before buying it. What exactly you need to analysis?
    1). Domain Authority (DA)
    2). Spam Score
3). Try to search that domain in web archive (Check what you find it)

    That's it.

And Try to choose a domain with higher DA and lower Spam Score.

Note: Higher DA domain price also high. But it will give you more power to standing on search engine rather than starting to boost your domain from scratch.

A domain name is the manner by which your site will be known on the online, regardless of what kind of site you'll have. It is the unique address of your webpage on the web and it will be yours as long as you keep paying the yearly charge ($10 - $15 for .com domain).

    1. Choose a unique name
    2. Brainstorm
    3. Make it easy to type
    4. choose ".com" first
    5. Make it brandable
    6. Shorter is always better
    7. Avoid trade mark problems
    8. No numbers or hypens
    9. Beware of trends
    10. Marry your domain name
    11. Check Social networks

You can't "change" the domain name as per say, (as in converting it from XXX to YYY), but you can buy another domain and then redirect the old domain to the new one (also known as a 301). So when people visit your old domain they'll automatically arrive at the new domain.

I faced the same problem too.

I used to ask myself those same questions.

    1. Should I get an exact keyword rich domain?

    2. Or should I get an authority domain name?

    My answer is very simple.

Use YOUR name as domain name and build a blog upon it if you are promoting information products.

But if you are promoting physical products, pick a general one that best describes your niche and site you are going to build.

I for example used Christmas And New Year Gifts since that domain is not used by anyone in 2013 and I think it is pretty cool since Christmas and New Year holidays are close to each other.

Most importantly I can promote any physical product I want so long as there is a market for it and eventually build it into a fully-fledged authority site.

If you find that you are doing solid whitehat SEO and NOT ranking then it is likely that someone else was the previous owner of that domain name. The previous owner may have had a bad backlink history which can negatively impact SEO.

The biggest issue is that websites such as AHREF or monitorbacklinks do NOT show archived backlinks. The second next problem is that those bad backlinks may negatively impact your SEO months down the line.

Any dot.com is better than the other choices.

Now just work with your intended keywords or your offerings.
"Place" "HQ" "WI" "IL" "Town" "Ville" "Options"

are all examples of Add-Ons to your intended title.
Mostly, the URL should be easy to remember
and as short as possible. But easy is the key.
That's why we stick with .com

Except for public radio. They go with ".org"

For example "Fiverr" I use it but I hate the name.

"FiveFryPans" would have been a better name.
    "FiveGoldenRings"
    "Fivetimes"
    "Fivebuckoffers"
