Boat and Jet Ski Rentals...... Door Hangers Effective?

For a Boat Rental and Jet Ski Rental business that rents boats, jet skis, tubes, and water sports items. Would door to door hangers be an effective way of drawing calls and booking at the lake? I do live in a high populated warm climate city (Austin) with lakes everywhere and every time you go to the lake people are asking to rent your skis or boat. The demand is high.

Anyone think door to door would get an average response rate as well as other industries?

    I would think it's a big waste of time.


    You would be better off finding places people looking to rent or interested in these things hang out and advertise there, even though it will be more expensive if you only compare the costs to produce and deliver the ads.


    That is to say, unless, in Austin, there's a whole neighborhood of people who moved there just to be close to boat rentals.


    Who is likely to rent/ buy/ use your stuff?


    When are they likely to do it?


    You have to hit those people and right before they're about to buy, if you want maximum returns.


    Just hanging flyers in a particular neighborhood will get how many of these? Two? Three? Zero?


    So, first, who's your ideal client?
    Then: where do they spent their time (what magazines they read, what shows they watch, what media do they consume?

    NO. First, because we have no idea what your concept of an AVERAGE RESPONSE is. I'd bet it would be zero. That would be the average response.

    Today, can anyone imagine someone going to the lakes, for watersports, who does not have a cell phone and therefore, instant access to every jet ski, boat, rental company in the area?

    And as for the demand, how was this measured, a few people asked you to rent your skis? There is no shortage of boat rentals, jet skis, pontoons, floating devices in the greater Austin area, I got at least 20 at Bing, so the supply is there too.

    Door hangers can be useful and a good way to market certain industries, businesses...more suited to home ownership; repair, maintenance, beautification, etc.

    They don't generally work for something like boat rentals, because if someone is going to the lakes, they plan...and find all the supply they need.

    Landscapers, roofers (in certain older neighborhoods), heating/AC, would be industries which could benefit from a well constructed offer on a door hanger...so the answer is NO for your boat rental idea, but MAYBE for other industries.

    The place to leave pamphlets or flyers is at local hotels and motels, campgrounds, etc. Even better if you can print them up to seem like a special deal (10% off or so) for THAT hotel/motel/business. Also many counties offer very cheap ads in their publications and you may be able to work with the local tourist bureau to include a 'special' flyers with their mailout packages to potential visitors.


    I know these tactics work as a friend of mine has used them very successfully- but I expect it's dependent on the area you're in. Visitors in our area are focused on the universities, state parks, etc....not a big city area.

      Thanks Kay, you fired off some old neurons re Don Alm, a 'former' Warrior, who may have been banned a time or two in the past...but he did have ideas.

      And you reminded me that he did a lot with hotels/motels, I think it was with pizza shops and displays in every room.

      And that triggered another ancient idea, that of compiling a best of, or a booklet of discounts for local events and local sites.

      So many ways to promote a boat rental business, probably more effective than door hangers, and since Austin is a destination spot for many people, and the lakes are one of the bigger draws...someone who compiled a list of discounts, or specials, and offered them to hotels/motels, well, it could be a win/win/win situation.

      I'll have to search for old Don Alm posts, and sort through some of those that weren't too offensive.

      Hotels/motels seem like a logical target for promoting boat, watersports rentals. Thanks.
