eBay Guide Series 2 – Tools To Get Started

If you are new to eBay, this blog post will help you to get started. I will share with you the basic tools you need to get started (in fact more than just tools):
1. Computer & Internet Connection: If you want to make money online, you shall need a PC for sure. Even though eBay comes with secure system or encrypted software which no protects your personal details, you are recommended to have anti virus software to protect your own data in your PC. A broadband may not be necessary but if you can afford to have one, that would be make your life easier.

2. eBay ID: You will need an eBay ID, does not matter you are a seller or buyer. But an eBay ID is very critical for a seller. Your ID should be relevant to your business nature. Example if you are going to sell TupperWare, then the best ID would be TupperWare. If the ID is taken by someone else, you can always go with TupperWare-Shop or something representing your business.

3. Postal Address: You shall need a postal address for shipping. But keep in mind that PO Box may not be accepted for Registered Post shipment. If you are shipping with registered post, you can always track the status of your shipment with your local postal service website. For example, you can use www.usps.com for all US shipment. For Malaysia, you can use www.pos.com.my (do not give you the detail as usps does). Some countries do not offer tracking service online, i.e. UK, Aus etc.

4.Payment System: To purchase or to accept payment for all eBay transactions, one will have to register a Paypal account. Paypal is also owned by eBay. To open a Paypal account, you will have to link your credit card or Bank account with Paypal. Of course you can still use other forms of payment, e.g. Nochex, cheque, Bank wire or transfer, money order, or the very traditional cash payment! It is all down to the preferences of the seller and buyer. For your information, 90% of eBay purchases are handled by Paypal. Both buyer and seller are protected/insured by Paypal. Paypal has made a lot of money out of its service because it charges around 3% for all transactions (it varies for each country and normally only the seller being charged).

5. Camera: Keep in mind that an eBay listing with photos is more likely to sell. I guess everyone should have a digital camera nowadays. It is a basic and essential piece of tool for you to illustrate your listings. If you do not have a camera, your iPhone will do the job!It is free to upload 1 picture in your eBay listing. But you will have to pay image fee for having multiple photos in your listing. One way to get away with this is to host the photos in your own server instead of eBay. Then you will be able to post as many photos as you want in your listing for free. If you do not have your own server or hosting, you can always consider some free services provided online: FreeImageHosting.net or Imageshack.us.

6. eBay Store: If you have many items to sell on eBay, you are recommended to open your own eBay Store. You will be charged monthly for the store but it will surely provide you a better exposure on eBay. You will also enjoy many marketing and managing resources once you subscribe to eBay Store.
