So I've not written for a while because I've been working on a great new product. I'll tell you more later but for now be assured it's in line with the kind of thing I'm writing about.

For now though I wanted to touch on backlinking again.

Backlinking for those of you not is the know is when another site links to your site. They put a hyperlink on their site pointing to your site. This is viewed by Google as a kind of vote for your site. The more backlinks you have the better your result in the Google rankings.

The trouble with backlinking is it is a thankless task. You can work at it for months and get no visible resultes. When you do get results they can seem pretty tame.

You'll find that lots of people will tell you they have the solution. Believe me I've tried them all. Most of them work in a limited way. The reality is the only way to get backlinks is to work at it yourself.

This is where the problem comes in. It's hard. Really hard to keep going. Backlinking takes time and effort and energy. And is you're like me you want to see immediate results. You don't want to wait for ages to see a vague improvement in your Google list.

Sadly the truth is that if you want to be successful you either need to pay someone a regular amount or you need to set aside time to do it yourself.

If you go the do it yourself route then I've a few suggestions:

1. Pick a day and time when you'll do the backlink work
2. Pick a separate day to write the article or prepare the material you'll need for the backlink
3. Build a strategy for the backlinks. Don't just do articles, or forums or paid links. Do a bit of everything to make it look natural.
4. Keep a track of your keywords. It's the only way to measure progress. Use the free version of traffic travis or similar to track your main words.

Well that's it for now. Four tips and a few thoughts. Till next time...
