6 Ways To Increase The Click-Through-Rate On Banner Ads Without Resorting To Spam

It is a well-known fact that the click-through-rates on banner ads have been declining. In fact, they have continued to go down since the very beginnings of the Internet. A blog post written by Andrew Chen in 1994 stated that banners at one time enjoyed click-through-rates as high as 78%. However, they have plummeted to where they are now less than 0.1% these days. The way that many marketers try to overcome this is to create very spammy looking banners to obtain high click-through-rates. But how can you increase your click-through-rate without resorting to spam?
In LaunchBit's email ad network, (which supports both banner ads and text ads), some interesting data was found that offers insights into how to create banner ads with higher click-through-rates. The insights came from the part of their network running banner ads as opposed to text ads. All of the ads that are mentioned below had greater than 1% click-through-rates.
1. Banners that are text-heavy achieve high click-throughs.
A majority of banner ads that you see these days are full of color and graphics. However since most banners look like this, they really don't stand out. Those kinds of banners always don't anything about the services or products they represent either.
One good example of an effective text-based banner ad comes from SourcePad. The ad has a plain looking logo on a dark gray background with the following text: "SourcePad. "Looking for a good developer? SourcePad has one of the best app development teams in New York City and works exclusively with startups. Ask for Rob."
You can use your graphical space much like the SourcePad ad does by explaining in 1 to 2 sentences what your value proposition is to improve your click-through-rate. If you have a good value proposition, consumers will notice it and be more motivated to click on it.
