This is not an uncommon question that is often asked by beginning bloggers. The answer, as always, depends on the purpose. However, most experienced bloggers will say that WordPress is probably the best blogging platform.

Why is that?

Well, first of all WordPress is an open-source system. That means WordPress as a blogging platform is free! When you look at what you get when you install WordPress you really have to be impressed. I mean here is a system that is totally free yet does everything you'd expect of a system costing thousands of dollars.

So, what if WordPress can't do exactly what you needed to do? This is really where WordPress sets itself apart from any other blogging or content management system on the planet. If there is anything you need WordPress to do, you can bet that some geeky programmer in a dark room somewhere created for you. So except for making you a cup of coffee you can expect WordPress to be able to do anything you want to.

WordPress handle this through a system of plug-ins. WordPress is open source so in theory anybody can alter the source code in any way they want. However, the preferred method is to create a plug in with the functionality that you need.

So what if it isn't really functionality but to sign you're looking for. With a corporate system you would still have to pay a designer to create the design for you. You can still pay a designer to create a design for WordPress, but there really is no need to do that. The fact is you can find hundreds if not thousands of free designs you can use for your WordPress blog. Many of those free designs can be customized further to create your own unique design.

That makes WordPress one of the most easily customizable website systems in existence.

What about the alternatives? Well if you're looking for free blogging systems that means Blogger. Blogger is a free hosted system by Google that allows you to create your own blog. It's a pretty good system to be honest, but since it's a hosted installation it isn't quite as flexible as WordPress. If you're just starting out blogger will do just fine. And if at a later date you decide to switch to your own hosted system you can easily export the posts from blogger to the new platform. That is of course if you're new platform is a self hosted WordPress platform.

With that in mind it might be worth considering starting with WordPress from the get-go. If you're not interested in hosting your own blog you can always get a free WordPress blog at WordPress.com.

I'm still wondering which blogging platform is the best for you? In that case, I recommend that you download The Essential Blogging Checklist which you can get at http://www.theessentialbloggingchecklist.com. It's only seven pages, but it's seven pages that will get you going today!
