Deep thoughts about Link Bait

A few days back, I added an article called 'How to Create Link Bait' to my Blog. That article deals with what link bait is, why it's important, and how to get some for yourself.

The problem with link bait is in coming up with the idea. What can you or I do that hasn't already been done a million times before? At first, I dismissed this thought. I figured it doesn't really matter if it's already been done, as there will be plenty of people who haven't encountered it yet. So my version will seem unique to them.

Then I started to think about PageRank, because that's the whole purpose and point of link bait. There is a small number of very influential people, and it's their review of your link bait and associated link that matters. These people almost certainly will have seen a borrowed idea before. The reality is, if they're unimpressed they'll simply ignore your creation.

So it's back to square one. How can you and I come up with an idea likely to impress big players, and benefit from the link juice and traffic that results? I don't have a complete answer, and welcome your feedback via comments. Here's my thinking so far...
  • Bring together a number of related but otherwise separate tools to make a product suite (e.g. Microsoft Office is a suite of business applications)
  • Find a new media with which to present complex information. The information must not already be available on that media. And the media itself must make it easier to benefit from the information
