The role of Meta Tags is often misunderstood by many in the online community. To begin with, Meta tag is a hidden tag that lives in the <HEAD> of an HTML document. It is used to provide additional information about the HTML document. The Meta tag has three possible attributes and these are the content, http-equiv, and name.
Meta tags always provide information in a name/value pair. The name and http-equiv attributes provide the name information and the content provides the value information. Meta tags do not have a closing tag.
Search engines prefer to focus all of their interest on “user visible” text. The user can’t see the keywords Meta tags unless they view the web page source. It is this invisible feature that makes the keywords Meta tag so attractive for a spammer to abuse it.
The most important tags are the following:
Title Tag
Description Metatag
Keywords Metatag
Robots Metatag
NoODP Metatag
