Hello fellow Warriors,

As far as I can see and tell from my own experience, a basic understanding of copywriting is a core requirement for success online. I've done some reading around the web and I've polished off a couple of books on the subject, but more recently I've been looking into copywriting courses. More specifically, I'm interested in sales copy courses.

Now for the questions..

I was wondering how the esteemed members of this sub-forum viewed the following website (and the people/company behind it):

American Writers and Artists Incorporated (AWAI)

Are their courses, in your mind, worth looking at?

Also..

How did YOU get into the business? A training course? Accidentally? Did you attend a "legitimate" school program?

I'd rather take a "real" sales copywriting course, if the less expensive do-it-from-home type options are not as respected as they (of course) claim to be.

Thanks in advance for your input and honesty.

Cheers,
-Adrian

    • Well done Andrew.

I’m not sure if we stand yet another 7 pages of AWAI comments.

      Hopefully you’ve saved us.

      Lol

      Steve

      P.S.

      Adrian,

Just to help – some say AWAI is good, some say it’s lame.

Most copywriters who’ve been around for 20 years plus years bought it.

At the time is was one of the few courses available.

We got some benefits. And moved on to bigger and better courses.

(one course on it's own will not make you an ace copywriter - it's not that easy - you have to keep learning)

Special note – Copywriting courses written by the top guru’s – the really good ones - are not shy on their prices.

Before you spend a mint – read some more books for around $10.00 a pop.

You'll find lots to choose from here - http://www.warriorforum.com/copywrit...ooks-ever.html

You'll discover if copywriting really is the game you want to be in.

        Thank you as well, Steve.

I'm not sold on it being "the thing I want to do", but I am sold on the fact that I need to have a good understanding of it, without necessarily being a master.. haha...

And, as with all things in life, I didn't think one course would be the end.. :p

        Cheers,

I'd rather you pick up a few recommended books mentioned in the thread in this subforum than attend the awai course. Some people may say "oh great, nice, wow" but I believe the same information can be acquired through real hands on practice, rewriting great copy and reading these books by the greats.

If you really need a course, get Secrets of a marketing rebel by John Carlton.

If you need teaching for super basic fundamentals, I found a marketer who pretty much can teach it - his name is Jason Fladlien and his Copy E Class.

If you need ads as case studies, go for the Robert Collier letter or Sugarman's Adweek book. If you need swipes, go to hardtofindads.com or infomarketingblog.com .

      Hey Winston,

Would you believe I've only started studying Copywriting quite recently and the book I just read is the John Carlton one - to say I was blown away would be an understatement.

The guy has a way with words... Looking forward to spending more time in this section of the WF and hopefully learn buckets about writing good copy

Since I wasn't around for the other discussion I'm going to throw in my 2 cents here.

The AWAI course was written for copywriters writing for the large direct marketing companies. Therefore it's much less edgy and much less emotionally charged...and less effective. It's good anyway as a basic primer.

Signing up at AWAI is like buying a product from Agora, Boardroom, etc. The real education is in observing their marketing process.

I was at the AWAI bootcamp in 2000. I had already studied Jay Abraham, Ted Nicholas, and Dan Kennedy. Even that bootcamp I thought was very basic. Recently I was upgraded to a complimentary Circle of Success membership. Their very high end training. It was good, but nothing compared to stuff I've gotten from Clayton and John Carlton.

Things have changed so much in the last 5 years. The fundamentals never change, but the level has been raised higher and higher in terms of educational materials.

It's just like being a jazz musician. In the 70's there was NOTHING. It was all learned through apprenticing with someone in the field. Then gradually courses started to come about. And today there are so many courses people have to do heavy research to pick the best ones because nobody has the time/resources to go through all of them. And who wants to waste their time even if they did?

They sell biz up products or things that are really basic watered down info on a niche area like social media, or video marketing, etc.

If you want to be a copywriter get a mentor. If not, hire a pro. You could easily spend years and thousands of dollars on courses and still not "get it." Same thing for any area. Guys trying to meet women. Buying books and going to expensive bootcamps. Just get with someone good with women and go out with them. They'll show you what you are doing wrong. Or ANY other skillset.

Books are great, but they aren't going to pop out of their covers, pat you on the back and say, "You're doing great!"... or, "Get off your butt and finish off that second draft!"

Plus, when you learned to drive, it was very handy having someone sitting there next to you, to give you FEEDBACK, to point out times when you were about to hit a lamp-post or an old lady.

In my experience... as a copywriting coach (not hitting old ladies)... feedback is a critical element, and books can never give you that.

At best, they can give you some general principles.

So in my completely, totally unbiased opinion...

...I would recommend some copywriter coaching.

    Paul,

    Spot-on advice!

Having a mentor... putting yourself in situations where you can interact with the best of the best are things that make the difference between good and great.

I don't think anyone would debate that Rick is an Elite Copywriter... Clearly, this is an indication that successful people do what unsuccessful people won't. Personally, I'm excited about meeting Rick in person in San Francisco

Oh Rick! I wish I could go. Will there be recordings of the event?

I'm probably half a planet away from where you guys are now. :/

Even if there is a recording, it doesn't compare to actually being there. Rick has agreed to chat with me at the event - where else does this happen?

How does a recording compare to that? Personally, I think Rick could be talking about cumulus cloud formations, and I would learn something about copywriting.

David Garfinkel? Brian McLeod? John Carlton? Lorrie Morgan-Ferraro? Mike Morgan? And ME? In the same room? Yeah, they talked me into it...
They talked you into attending? What's the big deal about that?

            LOL
