You wouldn't hire this guy to help you...

Hey Gang,

So I was talking with a business owner today about their website, and he was saying how they spent thousands of dollars to get a website designer to make it look all pretty and flashy blah blah blah.

Problem is the site is not anywhere close to being optimized to generate leads, or even convey a compelling message as to why visitors should do business with the company.

The result?

A website that cost a lot, and generates little in return. A common problem.

So I was just thinking...

What would be a good analogy as to why you wouldn't hire a website designer (that has no marketing / direct response background) to design a website, or even design just regular marketing materials for that matter.

Can anyone suggest a good analogy?
You wouldn't hire a __________ to do your ___________, so why would you hire a graphic designer to ___________?
I think I heard a great analogy of this a long time ago, maybe someone can provide one they use themselves to get the point across to frustrated business owners that say they already have "a guy who designs their marketing stuff?"

PS - By the way, I do always return back to the fact that their current marketing is doing little to generate sales, which is why they are speaking with me, but a quick analogy to use in the conversation which will simplify the need for a different "approach" is what I'm looking for.

A similar concept to website owners who pay for a site, then think they can write the content.

In my example I would say "you don't buy a dog to bark youself" but that's a little different.

To answer your question, there's a famous commercial going around that says "You wouldn't want your doctor doing your job, so why are you doing theirs?"

What would be a good analogy as to why you wouldn't hire a website designer (that has no marketing / direct response background) to design a website, or even design just regular marketing materials for that matter.
I don't know if this company was looking for one of those professional "jack of all trade" style people to build their site, but it sounds like they hired just one person which seems to be the case here.

Thousands of dollars is still on the low end for a professional website. Wendy's is currently having just the menu section of their site redone by a place called Resource Interactive that my friend works at. Do you know what they're paying? $300,000. Yep... $300,000 to add some functionality and re-design a single page.

However, they're getting top notch service as well.

It kills me when these companies pay $1,000 to $5,000 for a website and wonder why the "jack of all trades" they hired didn't provide them with a cutting edge website.

As far as hiring web designer that has no marketing experience, why would he need any? It's not his job to do the selling, it's his job to "design" the site to the client's expectations. Typically, a client will deliver a layout or stylesheet of how they want their site to look and that's how you have to design it. You can try to make tweaks or suggestions but they usually don't like that.

A lot of people get confused over what a Web Designer and what a Web Developer does. I've met people who are knowledgeable on both but great at neither. Much like people keep telling everyone else in here that they "have" to pick a specialty and only write Copy about a specific niche to be considered an authority or an expert, those people have to pick one: Web Designer or Web Developer

They need to know that they paid piss poor for the web design expectations they had and they screwed up by hiring just one guy to do it all. I don't know their financial situation or their budget but if they want it done right, they're going to need a Copywriter, a Web Designer, a Web Developer, Quality Assurance and a whole other list of people.

Then again.. I've seen what a lot of people on here consider a "quality" website which could be designed in the ever deprecated Front Page. I'm talking about professional and clean code websites that customers enjoy browsing. Responsive websites that load effortlessly on mobile and handheld devices as well never hurts.

Why do you even need an analogy? Wouldn't you simply say, "so... relying on a graphic designer to create response generating material hasn't worked out, has it?"

lol, I see this all the time. I like the analogy. I'd match the analogy to your customer avatar. And hell, why not have some fun while you're at it?

    For attorneys:

"You wouldn't hire a body guard (or a mime lol) to defend you in court, so why would you hire a graphic designer to build your online storefront?"

    For medical professionals:

"You wouldn't hire a plastic surgeon to deliver your next baby, so why would you hire a graphic designer to build your primary online marketing tool?"

    For plumbers:

"You wouldn't hire a florist to do your plumbing, so why would you hire a graphic designer to create your online storefront?"

    Relevancy plus novelty baby!

    Good luck with it.
