The one TRUE method to making it as a copywriter...

...doesn't exist.

Unless you count "writers write" as the essential part of that equation. It IS true, after all...you'll never be a copywriter if you only study, never write.

The funny thing is, when I was struggling I got lots of advice on how to be a copywriter and what the ideal avatar of a successful copywriter looked like.

And I don't really look like that.

But am I successful?

Yes, by my definition. I pay my bills on time. I have plenty of money for food and even for fun. I have health insurance.

And guess what? It comes from a full-time copywriting job plus freelancing on the side.

Am I making 6 to 7 figures?

No. Not yet. I decided to get paid to learn instead of splitting my focus. Before, I could certainly write - but in the back of my mind I was always worrying about whether I'd be able to make rent in one of the most expensive areas of the country.

Doesn't really make the promises of riches and success I made on behalf of my clients ring true, does it?

So I built a portfolio and I got a part-time job, which I leveraged into a full-time job.

Again, in the most expensive area of the United States.

Now I have the freedom to study and grow without worrying that the course or book I just bought means I don't get to eat the next meal.

Trust me, I've been there.

I can point out plenty of great parking spots in Silicon Valley where you can camp in your car for a day or two before the cops catch on.

Yeah, I'm a corporate copywriter. Plenty here probably look down on me and my kind.

We're sellouts.

We're not REAL copywriters because we're not at home in PJs watching the cash roll in.

But hey...I'm getting paid to write copy. AND I'm getting paid to learn. That strikes me as success.

And here's the thing...my definition of success can and likely WILL change.

I dig getting paid to do what I love.

But the fact remains -- I'm a heavily tattooed red-headed rock singer who enjoys playing dodgeball in her spare time. Corporate life is not my long-term strategy.

Probably doesn't help that I swear like a mother******. The suits hate that shit.

The point of all this? Don't let someone here or anywhere tell you what success looks like.

You'll know it when you've found it.

And if you don't think you've found it, you probably haven't - keep searching and studying and growing.

If you think you have found it, rock on. Throw a damn party and celebrate the fact that you get paid to do what you love.

And if some day your definition of success changes and you decide you need to chase greener pastures, you'll have everything you need - experience, confidence, a little more wisdom - to move on to bigger and better things.

Two cents from a not-so-new copywriter.

What you're linking to is an "article" written by a content-writer who seems to think that writing stuff for the net means you can call yourself a "copywriter". He bills himself
an experienced content strategist, respected blogger and SEO copywriter.

      Copywriter my fat fanny.

Don't know about the camping in your car bit, but English people hate having to pay to park their cars so you might have something there!

Speaking of posts that kick ass... Rick, you're blog post here....

21 Incredible Copywriting Formulas (I Use)

That puppy is probably more valuable than 99% of the WSOs that show
        up on this forum.

Amazing, amazing post... and something that everyone here should keep handy. I know I do. You have no idea the value you gave people with that.

And even though I've never met Angie... sometimes you can just tell certain people who "get it" and write like they "get it" and Angie is one of those people.

This place needs SO much more of her here....

    First of all...

    You're making a living as a copywriter.

You're WAY ahead of the curve - compared to where most people are at.

Even if paying the bills in Da Bay aren't easy, you're living in a place that's awesome. You're doing something that lots of people on here WISH they could do.

    I get it.

If you aren't living lavishly, it can feel like a lie to tell people, "I'm gonna make you a butt load of money with this launch."

When you're distracted by your own circumstances... and caught up in scarcity-thinking, it takes guts to say you're the best copywriter for the job.

    Here's the key...

Find a way to feel abundant. This isn't directed at you Angie. I'm just speaking in general.

    And I'm serious...

Find a way to feel abundant. It could be as simple as finding that inner-knowing, "My copy absolutely CAN make the right client tons of money." Focus on that. Not on your circumstances.

From that feeling place, write your own pitch copy... and position yourself to reach that person; that client.

    Why?

Well, when you're in a place of scarcity, it's easy to project your beliefs onto other people. "Oh, he can't afford to pay me what I want and deserve. So I'll bid low - just to get the gig."

You're the expert. Do whatever it takes to FEEL that way. And make your decisions from that mindset.

Sorry to jack your thread Angie. It's just important for newer copywriters to get... you can position yourself any way you want. YOU get to create the hook, copy and campaign direction. YOU get to choose your ideal client... and go after him or her... or them. YOU get to position your copy to create whatever impact you want. It's all your choice.

Nobody has to know your circumstances. It's none of their business.

Brilliant. I've been there too. I've been homeless twice in my life - as a kid. I know what it feels like to be scared... and not know when I'll eat next.

    Again...

Do what you gotta do to take your mind away from that thinking.

Angie got a job where she gets to make a living as a copywriter, build her skill-set, confidence and side business. Now she gets to focus on learning, growing and creating results - not wondering how she'll survive. Love it.

    I promise you...

    Nobody thinks that.

Don't be fooled by the positioning and facades of copywriters on this forum.

Mark - thanks for taking the time out to write such a thoughtful reply. I'd hesitated going too much into the HOW of my experience because I've seen people here skewer the idea of corporate copywriters.

No, I'm not doing sales writing most of the time. In fact, I'm usually elbows-deep in one weekly circular or another.

But taking the plunge and going corporate has taught me a lot.

    1) I learned how to write FAST. Deadlines are deadlines are deadlines. The presses don't stop when it has to be in store on a certain date.

    2) I learned how to quickly rack my brain for a decent idea. I can now toss out the first idea I think of, gauge reactions, defend/strengthen/change course if need be.

    3) I get to work with a team. I missed this when flying solo.

Not the chained-to-a-desk part, but bouncing ideas off people and having fun.

No joke - when we came up with 2 ENTIRE campaigns that were scrapped because the people asking us for said campaigns hadn't given us all the info, we came up with a campaign called "Up Yours" - it still comes up on days we're feeling frustrated.

Plus these people bring years of experience from Nordstrom's, Macy's, JC Penney, and more. Pretty awesome getting to pick their brains!

    4) With every little success I have here, I get to push a little harder. We got to do a rather innovative print ad run to replace the traditional weekly circular. Full color, half page ads. And the response was INCREDIBLE. Now I get to pitch cool attention-getting ideas for direct mail.

    5) Can't stress it enough - I get paid to do what I love. And paid well. And now that I've been at it awhile, I'm a little restless and looking to build up the side biz again.

The best part? I get to do it on my terms now - take my time, find the RIGHT clients with the RIGHT projects. No more taking shitty jobs because it's that or don't eat.

The point, as always, is forge your path and don't look back. Learn with every mistake and learn even more with every win.

Let others' opinions fuel your fire, or else let 'em roll off your back. Your effort, your persistence, and your skills alone determine whether you'll be successful.
