It's an automated progression of pre-written emails which are sent out to your subscribers, in sequence, starting on the day they subscribe (by putting their email address into a little box on your website and submitting it - that's an "opt-in box") and continuing at whatever intervals you've programmed in to the autoresponder software/service that sends them out.

Usually a mixture of "credibility-establishing" material, and some promotions (affiliate promotions, if you're an affiliate marketer).

It's all about two things, really: continuity and expectation-setting.

So each email should pick up from where the previous one left off, and remind people why they're getting it and what you were discussing with them, and end by saying clearly when the next message is "coming up" and what it will be about (trying to make it sound appealing/interesting, of course!).

And the content needs to fulfil whatever the people signed up for. "First you set their expectations and then you fulfil them".

The more your subscribers trust you, and the better they feel they know you, the more willing they'll be to buy things on the strength of your recommendations. And generally the less "salesy" you sound, the more you'll sell. In affiliate marketing it pays to let the vendor's sales page do the selling. All you need to do is get targeted traffic to the sales page. And you do that by building trust, so that your subscribers are influenced by your recommendations, because of all the valuable content you've given them in the other emails in which you weren't promoting anything at all.

What is your niche about? Your emails series will be related to your niche. Every 2-3 days or whatever you set your auto responder at, a new email in the series would go out to your list.
Let's say that your niche is Scuba Diving In The Florida Keys. Here are some titles for your email series...you fill in the body with quality content:
1st email: Popular Shipwreck Sites In The Keys
2nd email: The Most Beautiful Fish To Be Seen While Diving In The Keys
3rd email: The Best Equipment For Diving In The Keys
4th email: How I Rate The Different Keys For Dive Quality
      etc.etc.
      Good Luck

Make sure they have a mix of content and promo emails. Give immense value, but don't give away all your secrets. Thats what the product you're going to sell to them reveals.

I've been following this format in a new niche and so far my open rates are near 100%. Its CRAZY how well it works.

in simple form, email series is just a number of lined up messages you intend to send to your subscribers over a certain period of time. for example i can create an email series of 15 messages to be sent in a month to all my subscribers. this means that i will structure them to deliver every other day. that is i will send on Monday, Wednesday Friday Sunday Tuesday Thursday and so on. by the end of the month i would have sent 15 messages in all.
