What are some of the best and most popular sites to get links nowadays? I used to see recommendations for article directories, pdf sites, slideshow sites etc.

I think it's safe to say that those have gone out of style. However, stuff hasn't changed that much. You can start out with social media, but you have to figure out which sites the people in your niche prefer. You can do some blog commenting on similar blogs in your niche, but you need to make sure that you make relevant comments. The best ones to leave comments on are usually moderated. You can also find the top forum in your niche, and do the same thing. This should get you started.

Nowadays, if you are not an SEO expert or have the resources to hire one, you are probably better off building up your authority and brand by producing awesome content and sharing it within your community.

Google's algorithm is built to promote high-quality content from trusted resources, hence why you see the same blogs and websites at the top of Google so often.

Your goal isn't to rank well in Google, it's to want Google to want to rank you.

I'm looking to build links from a couple of the top sources.

If I can do both, it will probably help more.

Your post would have made much more sense if it was posted in 2010-11.

Make sure those links are dofollow, so I believe you could start with twitter, found some posts related to your market and write some legit comments, leave some links, post there. However, this is good for conversations./sales/SEO but not so much for building a nice fanbase. Try facebook to build a community, create a page, a group, be social, set a facebook ads campaign. Register to the most popular socia lsites like linkedin and leave your links here too. Don't forget to register your website with google webmaster tools also include google analytics. Also register your busness with G+, this is really helpful to get noticed Good luck. P.S. don't forget to read this forum, because there are millions of other tips other guys are suggesting.
