I've been asked to mentor colleague...

Hi Everyone

I have a colleague who has recently started up their own business and is writing and doing DM full time. They have asked me to informally mentor them and guide them.

I have been doing this informally over the past 6 months while they have transitioned out of their full time job and into their new business.

It got me thinking, does anyone out there have any ideas for ensuring I provide the best guidance I can.

While I am flat out with my own business, I would like to offer what I have learnt over the past few years as when I went out on my own I had absolutely no support and have learnt it over the years through trial, error and failure

If you've got any great advice for mentoring, please send it my way.

Write it down your main steps. Draw your experiences into parts of path to be followed by them. Always provide the positive and negative aspects they will face in the journey, so they know everything is always a risk and a chance. Good luck!

Thanks for your post, yes I think I would like to formalise the support a little - up to now it's been lots of quick phone calls and chat but I think I would like to provide more substantial support and get through all the elements I struggled with when starting up my business.

If I knew back then what I knew now I would have a avoided a few challenges, that said it's all part of the journey isn't it.

I'm going to nut out a bit of a plan like you said and include the good and the bad, as there are plenty of both.

Just sit back and do what you do that gets your results. Write down a plan that the person can do. As a mentor you need to teach about goals and plans and working on important task. It's more of a mindset shift that you are doing.

      Agree!

Teach how to solve problems, don't dish out ready made solutions ..
The best mentor I had used to bust my ass if I wanted a ready made solution. He'Äd give advice on what pitfalls to avoid, but he never solved my problems for me, he showed me approaches how to overcome difficulties.

And he kept me focused and accountable.
