You nailed it on the head

A lot of people overcomplicate things...

That's why they end up not succeeding

What they're actually doing is they have pre-judged a money making system as 'too good to be true' or 'it takes too much work'

      So...

They put in a half-hearted effort

      AND

the results are all too predictable

Don't doubt it, give it your all and learn to solve problems as they appear

Don't feel that you're entitled to certain magical results with very little effort

I agree with superowid but i don't think is that easy. Like everything else it requires patience and knowledge and many other things. But making money this days is easier than 30/40/50... years ago when there was no internet.
We have all the tools now and setting up a business costs much less money than in the past.

What I have seen is there are two things that most people should keep in mind while trying to get into IM..

    1) Build Relations
    2) Stay Consistent

Now building an email list also comes under the second criteria, but not only would you want to build a buyer's email list, you must also focus on making connections with people related to your field.

Also, you have to stay consistent with your approach. In the words of Les Brown "...If it didn't work, that means it didn't work today. It doesn't mean that I failed..." so you have to be consistent with your approach.

    its true..

people over complicate the issue and botch the whole thing up..

plus when they do see some light at the end of the tunnel they stop being consistent.. and shoot themselves in the foot again...

keep it simple, and build a list..

The MAGIC in list-building is that it employs leverage in connecting with a growing audience WITHOUT additional physical overhead.

Anyone that has ever done the same thing, week in and week out with no extra reward should read the first sentence several times so that it sinks in.

Building an e-mail list seems to be profitable for many, but it's surely not the only way you could go. In reality, you should go with your strengths, so don't be afraid to experiment with other stuff also.

  • I do make some money on autopilot without a list. For the niche I'm talking about, it would be kind of pointless. I agree that people should try different things. If you can get enough passive visitors, then you might be able to just change your monetization method and make a decent amount of money.

$10,000 on products, ouch, honestly, I never needed to buy one, everything being sold as a product on how to make money, is information available online for free.

The issue is we have the mentality if it is worth something, it must cost something.

I used to give free meetup classes about Internet Marketing, one of the attendees told me she spent $2000 on similar type of session in another state ( she traveled to attend ), she told me, i am very knowledgeable and I can charge people for this (I know that, I just don't feel knowledge should be paid for). She was very excited I was teaching for free, for couple of month, but after that she stopped coming.

It's a common misconception that a bigger list is always better than a smaller one.

I'd much rather have a list of 1,000 highly targeted buyers than a list of 100,000 mostly bot traffic any
    day.

But yeah, I agree that it is simple in concept but not always easy to implement.

While I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment here, I'm going to rephrase it slightly.

I'd much rather have a list of 1,000 targeted buyers who still want more, than a list of 100,000 random email addresses.

If simply possessing a list of 100k would put you on Easy Street, making money online would take less than an hour. You'd be able to buy one of those spammy CDs of 100MM emails for $99, send that first email, and book your flight to paradise. Heck, if 100k means you have it made, 100 million should put you in the Forbes 400 by lunch.

That's always been my problem with many of the so-called "desperate buyer" niches. Once I've purchased your ebook on curing genital warts, then what? If the product works, I sure don't want to buy any more "genital warts cures". If it doesn't work, why would I trust you to buy anything else? Yes, you could start throwing mud against the wall, hoping to come across something else I might buy before I get bored with your emails and stop opening them. But wouldn't it be better to know that the people who bought your first product are almost guaranteed to want the next one in line?

The money is not in the list. And no one ever sends an email to 100k people. They use the automation to send 1:1 emails to 100k individuals. The power of email marketing comes from the ability to communicate with each individual on your list in the privacy of his/her inbox, not in the number of messages you can blast out.

There's an old question in philosophy - if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it still make a sound?

The equivalent question in email marketing is - if you send an email and no one opens it, did you really send an email?

There's a line from Ryan Deiss' book Invisible Selling Machine that I will never forget: "The guy who spends the most on advertising wins."

Yes, you can throw in all sorts of caveats about needing a good product to begin with and that it's certainly possible to make money without breaking the bank, and there are all sorts of strategies and techniques that can be very effective, etc.

Nevertheless, in all the years I've been involved in IM, I've never read a truer statement.

Share your knowledge for Free. Atleast that worked for me. Free WSOs or any free product in your niche, share them on high traffic forums and communities, get them to signup for an optin page, and rinse and repeat.

Not saying the free product needs to be 20+ pages of high philosophical thoughts. But, anything of value and people would definitely love joining in on your mailing list.

And after that stay consistently helpful with your email list. Ask them if they need any help with any particular thing, or just give them a free tip or something or the other.

There can be many hacks and tricks to grow your mailing list quickly, but it all boils down to one thing, if you provide value to the community, they would give you their valuable emails and heck you would even see higher conversions later on if you promote a product to them.

You need to add a sign up form to your website using a plugin if its Wordpress or a code if it's html.

Any of the services below are good to go:

      Aweber
      Getresponse
      MailChimp

If it's looking complicated you should hire a coder.
You will need to get a good writer with experience in writing newsletters to create series of email campaign for your tool.

I'm guessing the question was more related to how to actually get people signed up for a list which is also something I have not quite figured out the best way to do yet.

    Lots of good points here.

I notice that a lot of newbies want easy answers . . . simple single-option answers to what is "best" etc.

These kinds of answers, to people asking those kinds of questions, are rarely a good match with reality, which is complex and ever-changing.

One of the most important things I learned about internet-marketing is that it is a PROCESS, which means that even the experts don't know what will work best for their next offer . . . they can make some educated guesses, but then they will test, take the best results, improve them some more, test other options, test more and so on. Often, the first guess of an expert will lose money, but they know that's part of the process, learn and improve. A Newbie getting the exact same result will assume that losing money means that they have "failed", and then they quit, or move on to another method, fail at a few of them, then quit.

Good points about list-building . . . responsiveness is important. A list of buyers is often a good, responsive list, so that's one way of building a list when you start . . . create some good products and get them selling.

Most IM methods require either money or time (or both) to get worthwhile results. Wanting instant results with no understanding is often promoted as a "good thing" these days, but is rarely realistic, and even if it works for a while, things change rapidly on the internet, and if you don't really understand what you're doing, then you can't adapt to the inevitable changes.

Yes, this is one of the biggest problems for newbies in internet-marketing.

      Here's a solution . . .

Write down your real aims with internet-marketing, your strengths/weaknesses and your situation in terms of money and time to invest. Be totally honest.

Realize that "less is more" . . . i.e. having less different methods to choose from is a GOOD thing. That means your weaknesses are USEFUL, because they stop you considering methods that are not a good fit for you . . . for example, if you are an introvert, then there's no point even considering methods that require good salesman skills (such as marketing online services to offline businesses).

Those criteria should narrow down the possibilities, so you can focus on whatever is the best fit for you, personally.

Then you need to take action, and test all assumptions (this includes any method that you buy or find here) and find what works in practice, ask specific questions to learn more and improve specific areas of your method, keep learning, and at some point you will be making a profit.

It's a real business that requires the correct action and MINDSET to get results. If people can not start say a lawn mowing or roofing or what ever kind of business and be profitable they never will with the Internet.

Making money online is all about supply and demand and doing what needs to be done and not try to reinvent the wheel so to speak.

In my personal experience, building up an organic email lists yields better results as compare to buying a list from someone in the market. You can possibly end up jeopardizing your IM compaign if you start sending emails to a list which has been used to it's full potential. Therefore you got to be a original player in the market.

A list is an asset to a business. It is not a business in itself.

Once the fundamentals are put in place, such as what you're going to sell, who you are going to sell it too, the list is then considered if it's an appropriate tool for the business model.

The products are not the afterthought. If anything, the list is.

An effective list which keeps on providing trade for affiliate products, needs to have fresh subs fed into it constantly to avoid loss of the tail end. i.e The people who are tired of the regularity of emails advertising third party products who eventually drop out or disregard your correspondence.

To maintain the 'top-up' demands a strong work ethic, since people don't continue to hang onto your every word and value your emails like gold when you are handing them over to someone else in a click.

Making money online is really simple, but it is the hardest thing to implement. I think that the hardest part about making money online is that there are so many different ways to do it. I think this is the part that most people get stuck on.

The formula to making money online is really simple. You need traffic that converts on the offers that you have. If you really break making money down online into its simplest form this would be it. Create a website where you offer value. Build up an audience by offering your content to them.

If they like the content that you are offering to them they will sign up to be on your email list. Once they're on your list the next thing that you want to focus on is building a real relationship with them.

Once this relationship is created and the people on your list feel like they can trust you they will buy anything that you tell them to buy.

I know a lot about online marketing and there are some marketers that I follow that I would buy anything that they recommend because I trust them so much. I am sure that this is the relationship that we all should try to establish when we are building our online businesses.

Taking action and staying positive is the most important thing. Many people get stuck in information overload, procrastination, negativity and other poison mindsets. People in general are fearful and many of the people reading this. Like they say about all of the famous entrepreneurs you need to experience many failures, get up, dust yourself off and keep moving forward.

Don't tell people you know what you are doing because they will always throw in their negative 2 cents. Stick to like minded people like the ones on this forum.

I believe in the old adage... Give and you shall receive. If you provide a real incentive to your propective buyer to add their name to the list, they will be more perceptive to receive your email. They have a perception that they may need the information that you provide. Keep providing good content, good products and your list will build itself. Clean your list regularly. Check that the focus of your marketing efforts match the people who are receiving your email. Good luck to you. List building is a priority and should remain the main focus online because that list is an asset.

I agree. the best thing about building a list is that i can not say its hard but you need to put a lot of effort to start but once you have started you are set for life. You create yourself an asset that brings money on demand because you can just send an email out with your offer and you earn. It may be expensive to set up at first but cheap to run.

Honest answer? Like Chris said... Even experts don't know 100% that they will succeed in a new attempt to create a new online income stream. There is never a guarantee when you work for yourself.

With that said, however, "experts", or in other words, people who know the basic fundamentals of marketing and list building, are usually very successful, because they know the basics!

Learn the fundamentals! Then experiment. Build off of what you've learned. Act upon what you learn as you learn. You'll never be given the "keys to success". Success is the journey you follow to find your purpose in life.

Money isn't the end goal. Money is just a tool you use to create more. By being smart with what you invest in, such as online tools and resources, you can create a machine that will in time, bring more money. But you need to be driven by goals in life. For instance, I would love to get my pilots license, as well as help people in need in my community. To do either, I need money. What do I do? I use my basic knowledge in certain business models, for me, it's product creation and affiliate marketing. I create income streams, and expand the ones that show promising results, and drop those that don't.

It's all trial and error. Successful people are successful with their work, but that's the only thing people see. They don't see the days wasted in frustration and agony over attempt after attempt. People don't see the long hours, lonely days at the computer, and struggle of the learning curve to find what clicks for them.

Put in serious work and dedicate to educating yourself through free material online, as well as paid courses. One day you will sit up in bed with an "OMG!!!" thought, and miss an entire night's worth of sleep because of all the notes and ideas your brain will spit out at you.

TAKE ACTION! Who cares if you fail?! Failing is quitting! Missing the target doesn't mean you failed! It just means you were off the target! Aim, and try again! Expert marksmen aren't made in a day. Businesses don't become successful with the typing of magic code that floods your bank accounts with money. It takes time, effort, practice, patience, and dedication.

To sum up my apparent rant... Learn the fundamentals. Work hard. At first, it'll be difficult. But once you see how simple it is to get results, you'll only build more momentum. Just keep at it, and eventually you will see the results you want! Keep your chin up, get your hands dirty, fill your mind with positive thoughts, stay dedicated to your life's goals, and stick with it!

Good luck, and I'll see you on top!!
