Is it ok to offer an upgrade sale of $17 to subscribers who have just opted in to gain free beta access to a software? Or is this not good practice? Since it's suppose to be in beta version. The initial $17 dollar offer are extra features provided inside the beta version software.

    Always be upselling, just don't do more than 2 is my sweet spot.

    There should not be a problem with this type of upsell as long as it is ethical and not some sort of rip off. Most every day products have this type of upsell, think cars with enhanced features.

    Hi, thanks for your replies. My main concern is sounding shady. If it's indeed in testing mode(beta) then trying to upsell more features while in testing mode sounds contradicting since again it's still in beta or not ready for release.

    Perhaps I can say these featured upgrades were stand alone offers prior, now integrated into the beta software. Perhaps i'm over analyzing : /

    If you offer a free beta access to a software, I guess it is not best to offer an immediate upgrade. You need to build trust from these beta testers first and you need to hear their feedback. What you can do , is to run a survey and ask them their experience with your software and from there you can improve your software based on their needs. If you think you can serve them better then this is the best time for you to offer this upgrade.

    Is it in Beta and unstable or have bugs, etc...?

    Beta implies new and needs further testing.

    Much different from having a stable free and paid version.

    Thanks for the help. I will be asking visitors help me cover the cost for development but not before giving them a whole lot of free features upfront and then upsale them to subscription.

    Beta is testing, yet to be released to the public according to definition.com This should help with exclusiveness. As it's testing why can't I offer exclusive offers to earlybirds?

      I don't see any problem with offering exclusive offers to early birds.... just make sure your offer is worth it. What value can they get from your software? Though it is still in beta state, you must show something to them on why they should invest on it. They must see a future in it.
