Which brand name should I choose?

I want to create a website for saving money. We are a family who has lots of tips, I know what brand name I want, but help me choose the spelling. It's between:

- The Frugals
- The Froogles

I know the 2nd one is misspelled, but so is Google, and it might resonate more with people. What do you think?

If both .com versions of the domain names are available, I think you should get both ASAP, but only use one. I tend to learn towards Froogles.

Then what does it matter what anyone else thinks?

You're the owner and you shouldn't have to rely on other people to make decisions about your business. No doubt you will get some people liking one name, some liking the other ... but in the end, profitable business isn't run as a popularity contest.

If people here overwhelmingly choose the name you don't want ... are you going to go with the tide of opinion? Will you let a few random people on a public forum convince you that you're wrong? I wouldn't.

I am going to disagree here. I personally think its not such a bad idea to run things past other people. When you are invested in a project we all are aware of those times the blinders come up, and what we believe at the time to be sound decisions are not so great. A recent example would be Gabriels ( the guy that runs the place ) post. He started a new business and went with a name he thought was A) Good and B) brandable. "Goanna Social" would not have been a named I would pick.. he admits in the thread.. probably not his best move ( see thread here: https://www.warriorforum.com/offline...-anything.html )

So to reach out to people and ask advice.. your wife your mother other family members.. your friends.. you are asking a bunch of "Yes Men" As far as I am concerned.. these are the last people I would ask... ( I sure hope my wife does not see this LOL ) So coming here to Warrior Forum, with a group of like minded people is not such a bad move.

So why don't I ask you all questions like this... The answer is kinda simple... I get paid to make these types of choices on a regular basis, both for my business and for the business' I do work for. I RELY on getting opinions to make these types of decisions. The people I RELY on, are those that I am targeting

I have found that coffee shops tend to be a gathering place for pretty much any demographic I may be looking for. Its super easy to set up a A/B test of sorts with images on a tablet, and reach out to the people next to you.. " Hey can I bother you for a moment which of these 2 or 3 do you like best?" "Ok, you like B.. can I ask some quick questions about yourself? What do you do? how old.. etc etc."

Because we ( Myself and other members of my office ) do this so much when we goto the coffee shops people will come up to us and ask.. "hey got anything to look at?" To give you a further idea of what we do. I live in a pretty small town... We have some amount of white collar but primarily blue collar workers.. the reality is small town mentality reigns. We will regularly travel about an hour away to the BIG city for these tests. Again, we want to get the test in front of the right demographic... Not to see which one is more popular, but for myself and my staff to make an informed and test decision.

Testing is the cure to ALL stupidity in business. Laugh now, but cry later when you didn't listen LOL

Think out side the box and use your profile name on here as the brand and the product under the umbrella of the brand is the first one called Frugal s , that way you an release other sites under the brand and you could have funny stick families as the logo!

I think I'd go with the first as the second might take more work to help brand and get people to recognize and remember

First one definitely. Because it is clarity.

The second one lacks clarity which tends to lead to confusion unless you get hyper clear on it.

It's going to be a struggle to brand either domain when a search of "froogle.com" pulls up Google's own shopping page, and "frugal.com" is already a deal-offering site.

The first thing to check when you're looking for a brandable name is whether there's any similar existing name - especially if it's operating in the same field. And you'd also need to capture the .com version, or risk a competitor taking advantage of your marketing.

I think it might be back to the drawing board on this one.

    I like the logic -
"Here's why I like it...Two OO's make it easier to remember as double letters are a good memory tool. It also rhymes (the actual letters too) with Google, maybe the most popular site on the Web. "
Go for it.... All the best

Trick is - to go to a site like nameboy and play around until you find a good name that is available.

You can waste a lot of time thinking about what you want - and asking for opinions - and then find the domains are taken. Make a list of your keywords that are involved with money/saving/frugality, etc and work on finding a domain.

If you find a domain you want - do NOT go into a registrar site, search the domain and then leave the site without completing the registration. If you do that, good chance third party software will temp register that domain hoping for a profit.

Most, if not all of the best one and 2-word dot com domain names have been scooped up. Still, if you have some money to invest you might be able to get what you're looking for with some negotiation. Considering your area of interest, that my not be something you'd want to consider.

Bottom line, unlikely you'll be able to get a premium dot com for 9.95. Many new extensions on the market, but don't quite have the prestige of the .coms.

Sounds like a great idea for a website. I wish you the best of luck on whatever you decide.

    I'd go with The Frugals.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[11253965].message }}
  • The space in between is impractical and makes it harder to remember.
You should consider the target audience, so I would not try so hard to make the name "funny" or "creative". You want to give tips to people who work for their money, earning it. ( most likely) So earnestness is important. And cutting bullshit. The name sounds like a bad band name: Frugals in itself is okay. Maybe highlight one of the consonants like Frugal$, or Fr$gals, where it doesn't impend on the meaning.
Most important thing is that it takes itself seriously, and what it conveys to sb who looks at it. Cause your topic has to do with money /serious, esp. saving/, I would go for smth concrete, direct, simple and money oriented or associable with money. Fru$als looks good XD.
For website: thefrugals, for brandname: Fru$als or Frugal$
