Do I HAVE to 'zone in' on a niche?

I have this idea of reviewing top Amazon products on youtube, no matter the category. Do you think I can gain an audience that would want to see top products reviewed? Or do I have to just go with one category of goods?

    Hi LDB,

    This is actually a very strong niche. Trouble is, it's also a very saturated niche. The trick? You need to go after an MC (micro-niche).

    Who would be your audience? Everyone? How do you find and advertise to everyone?

    If the category is toys for preschoolers then you look for parents or grandparents.

    If the category is ukuleles then you look for ukulele players. There are tons of Facebook groups where we hang out

    You need to be able to find out where your audience is and let them know what you're doing.

    That's hard without a defined audience.

    I think it would be a better idea to focus on one niche or specialize within a larger niche. This way you can add your own value and inject some energy into it. These days people want to be entertained just as much as they want attention.

    As Mr. Addams says really "drill it" down. There are literally tens of thousands to choose from so should not be to difficult

    totally agree with Tom. In my own experience, I've had worse results when I try to go into broad, super competitive niches like top products. I think to see better results in niches like that is you have to be able and willing to spend ad money, because I'm sure the top guys in that space most definitely are running paid ads.

    The good news is, you can still see results that are just as good when you go narrow and dive deep into a niche or drilling down into a micro niche as my fellow warriors here are saying. The important lesson I've learned is that this principle is the same in most of marketing too. The broader and more generally appealing you are, the worse your results may be, which also dilute you and make you a "me too" biz.

      Like a sort of "deal of the day" service? That's a big market - and hugely competitive. You'd have to be prepared to throw a ton of resources into promotion.

      What about the same "trending" idea, but narrowing it down to a particular product line or category? Once you've gained traction, you could then expand into other - closely related - categories.

      It doesn't matter - all the same advice about drilling down and specializing still applies.

      I think you underestimate the size of niche markets online - they are huge - this is a global Internet. Even the smaller niches have plenty of participants to support multiple active vendors.

      Going too broad means that much of your audience will have no interest whatsoever in you or your offers for things that they don't care about. It's better to keep the interest of (and engage with) your full audience each time you contact them.

      If, just for example, I'm on your mailing list, and you send me offers for acne medicine, dating sites, hair replacement, prepaid burial plots, student loans, the latest fad diet, Beyonce's new workout video, and Woof Woof Dog Biscuits how long do you think I'm going to pay attention to you and keep reviewing your offers? I don't want or need any of this garbage!

      Does this make some sense?

    I think an alternative approach is to make YOU the niche. So, rather than focusing in on a micro niche at the product level, you'd personalize it to your life situation.

    If you're a college student, start reviewing anything that's related to your lifestyle and will help you build an audience that identifies with you personally.

    I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of focusing on value, and deciding which of amazon's products are worth it. It would also have a comedic slant and 2 guys would be reviewing the products (Super Value Bros) . I think that by offering this same video review on amazon, I can gain further traffic to my youtube channel.

      The part in bold, IMO, is spot on. Two things, though.

      First, remember that value comes in many shapes and forms. When you get right down to it, value equates to how well a problem is solved for the consumer. In terms of your proposed business? Value can be a review that gives Joe an informed choice about a camera lens. But to another Joe? It could be the big belly-laughs he gets from experiencing the comedy in two grown men reviewing makeup. Different segments of this particular audience are defined by different perceptions of value.

      Second, be careful about how many creative ideas (or anything) you share on a public forum. (I should listen to this advice myself.) You have thousands of people looking to live what the kids call the Laptop Lifestyle. That means you have thousands of people looking for business models that work, or at least appear to have a strong chance of doing so. Slap down an idea? Or an entire model? Next week you may see 20,000 of those models or ideas in practice. When it comes to any creative ideas you have for this project - play your cards close to your chest.

      Now let me sort of break my own second rule.

      I'm more than a little familiar with this niche. I'm not into it. Just familiar.

      First question. Is your idea workable? The obvious answer is yes, because we see tangible evidence of it on YouTube.


      I could give you thousands of examples (not just videos, either; I'm talking channels). Amazon product reviews are so popular, they're a creator cliche.

      Second question. What are you going to bring to the table to offer a new type of value to Joe consumer? Or, can you repackage existing types of value with different wrapping?

      The second question is what you need to figure out.

      And keep the answer to yourself.

    it's tough to stay focus when you promote unlike niches dude, so i'll only advice you to go for niches that have something in common, or even just focus more in one niche, and master it very well, later i think you could know if you can merge another thing to it.

    Based on on the products you are reviewing you will get viewers who are likely interested in what you have to say .So I would narrow down the products I am reviewing so I am not confusing my audience .In other words Your message needs to be clear.

    I would get specific and target a niche within niche. Say for example "gaming" I would exclusively review different video games because there is room for growth and plenty of different video games to review. I hope that makes sense for you.
