If I can easily download "secure" S3 videos from the sales page of "Secure" S3 Plugin sites; NO SALE

Ok, I was just looking around to see what type of "secure" plugins/scripts are available to protect my S3 videos that I will be adding to a membership site.

3 of the top plugins/scripts that I have been recommended I was easily able to download the video that they claim is protected.

Now granted, anyone who really wants to take a copy of a video and knows what they are doing will find a way, but I didn't even really need to try that hard.

That to me is a real turnoff from buying the product.

Any thoughts to products that are REALLY able to secure S3 videos? Though I suspect that people will refer me to the 3 I have already looked at, and I don't want to mention any names. and I imagine those products DO offer some layer of protection (just not a lot) and make things easier to get started.

If you host anything on S3, I can get it for free.

I won't tell you how, but I will tell you that everything hosted on S3 is not secure.

Anything that is streamed can be stolen with enough effort.

Having said that Eddie James' S3Toolkit is about the best I have ever seen. It locks down buckets to stop browsing, creates temporary expiring links to videos so they can't be shared, as well as only streaming if the referrer is correct.

In otherwords, they can't view the video unless it is embedded on the page (no direct linking), they can't share the link because it changes, and they can't see the bucket contents.

Beyond that, capture IP addresses and rotate your videos using my watermark antipiracy system (you would have to search on the forum). Then it is perfectly possible to stop most casual piracy and track those who think they have got away with it.

Most of the time that level of effort isn't worth it though, because the pirates will never pay anyway.

Thanks Steve. I have not seen that S3 Toolkit before. And their sales page is "coming soon", so I can't seem to find too much about it.

Indeed. Whilst it doesn't stop saving the stream at video driver level (and to do that, you're looking at DRM), configuring S3 so that your bucket can only be accessed from your web server seems pretty trivial and I know we have YM users who have done just that to achieve what you are trying to do.

Do you need to have these videos streamed? If not, and they are being truly downloaded, then it is like any other file.

DL Guard will protect it just fine. The URL will never be seen.

If it is being streamed, I don't think you can protect it easily at all. There will always be a way to discover the URL.

  • Greg -- video wise you aren't going to find anything.

I know of a way that no matter what protection is used, in about 2 minutes someone with some background in computers can easily extract the video.

On top of that -- someone could just take a regular camcorder, film it (as a member), then redistribute it with NO technical knowledge.

A secure video is like trying to ground a teenager for a year. Not going to happen.

    A few points
-If you watch a video on your pc you can grab the file- if your just a little tech savy
-Locks only keep out thieves - most people are honest - focus on them

    on a more practicle note
I am setting up a members site with easymember pro
and added some vids last night- super easy
what the software does is load either the video or amazon link into a protected directory
it will then generate an encripted link to that
you then take that encripted link - (there are a few option parameters you can add- autoplay etc)
and drop where you want it to appear in the page editor that comes with easymemberpro
log in the the site as a member - the video is there to view
    pretty easy I thought
now......it may be possible to get past the encription
but anyone who's good enough to do that will know how to get the file from the view anyway....
I was pretty impressed with how easy it was to load the video into EMP
    cheers

Thanks for mentioning Easy Member Pro Danny... very happy to see you're loving the video embed features

Warriors, if getting a video on your membership is hard.. consider this:

That's all you need to enter when embedding videos with Easy Member Pro :-)

A warrior discount can be found in my signature for anyone interested in Easy Member Pro.

      Cheers,

      Anthony
