What Is Your Most Powerful Traffic Generation Strategy?

Hey there,

I have been curious to see what some of your favorite traffic generation techniques are. While everyone knows about Adwords, Social Media, Articles and all that rehashed crap...

What I'm trying to get at here is starting a discussion of some underground traffic getting methods that no one is talking about.

Let's get into the nitty gritty here.

I'll see if my thread can be deleted.

If the techniques are underground, they're *hidden* for some reason.

While everyone knows about Adwords, Social Media, Articles and all that rehashed crap...
That ^^ rehashed crap IS IN FACT what works.

Unless you get hands on something REALLY unique of your own, and generate traffic from there (and I believe you won't talk about it either...), all the rest is the usual stuff.

The main difference is this: some people know HOW to work that rehashed crap, some other people, don't.

@Fernando Veloso Well obviously bro, that is kind of the purpose of this post. To see if people are willing to share that stuff with this community.

And yes, I know that stuff works. It's what I use on a daily basis to make money, but fact is there are always new traffic sources emerging if you keep your ear to the ground. If people want to discuss those, I create this thread to do so.

Direct mail, properly done, can be a very powerful traffic generator. And we're talking about laser targeted traffic of real buyers, not just curiosity seekers.

In the direct mail industry, you are able to rent lists with very specific details including people who have bought similar products in the past via mail offers. Needless to say, this type of traffic converts.

Hardly anyone in IM is using this strategy, although other industry's have been using it successfully for decades. Also, direct mail is not prone to saturation and change the way so many online-based methods are. The fundamentals of solid direct marketing are just as valid today as they were years ago.

Lol, how did I know somebody was going to drop the direct mail bomb up in here!

Now not to talk any smack on ya bro because I know from experience how well direct mail works. My Pops has been using direct mailing in the publication niche to make good money his whole life. So yes it does work, but here is my only gripe about it...

How much longer is direct mail going to be around?

I seriously believe that at some point in my lifetime houses will cease to have mailboxes. I mean, the cost of doing a direct mail campaign is just so much higher than running a PPC campaign or something similar online.

I believe that mobile phones will become the mailboxes of the future. In fact, mine already is. I strive to eliminate paper from my life because I feel like it clutters things and creates unnecessary physical storage space.

My question is, how long will it be until all the younger generations embrace this type of thinking and the older generations who love direct mail pass on? Will it still exist 50 years from now?

Why does it matter if it will be around 50 years from now. It works. And you know it works. Profit from it NOW instead of worrying what will happen to it decades from now.

Amen bro. Find someone in your niche and find a way for that person to direct traffic to your site. Find five people with good size lists and you'll have target traffic and if you do it right a list of new customers that you can continually leverage to build an even bigger list.

Don't count direct mail out of the game just yet. Personally, I expect to see it as a viable option for the remainder of my life and yours.

Not everyone is connected to the wireless world, and even tho I am, I refuse to get the digital notices from my utility companies. For me, paper is easier to organize and to track. I am sure I am not the only stone-age Fred Flintstone in the house.

While on the surface, PPC seems a bit cheaper on the whole than direct mail, I have a buddy who flips houses for a living and direct mail is the most economical solution in his arsenal.

His customers are not searching for him online, because they don't know they need his offerings yet. He starts the ball rolling by planting a seed in their brains.

At $2.50 per mailing, his direct mail costs are far more cost-effective than PPC or any other online method (Melissa Data targeting very specific demographics).

Simply, the Internet is only one method of communication with consumers, along with newspapers, magazines, radio, television and direct mail.

Direct mail remains a powerful component in the advertising landscape, and you would be silly to ignore it.

Mobile media may be nearly as powerful going forward, but few companies have put the pieces together to make it work for them. And while I see a future in it, it is not necessarily going to be the answer for cold-calling potential prospects.

Anyway, I'm still doing some off page and social media optimization. Even though my targeted keywords are already on the first page of Google, I only got 200+ visitors per day.

Though I do believe some niches will be harder and I guess this also make them harder to get instant traffic

I envy you. If it doesn't go down wrong with you, tell me how you arrived at the right keywords to use. Obviously that is what drove your article high on Google.

Yeah, YouTube is solid. Your videos gain more exposure as time goes on and rank higher as they gain more views. Get on them videos girl! Even if its just screencasts, those are some of the best!

Oh, and dont forget to pop a link in that good ol description box!

youtube can be a great traffic source... i just hit 100K views in 2 years in a niche thats $3 a click on adwords... and youtube converts like crazy if done correctly

also check out the content network - ive used that for massive amounts of cheap traffic.

The best way I've found to drive traffic to my sites is through fist outsourcing your PPC campaigns to a pro company like ROI Revolution or W-Promote. They charge a % of your ad spend but they drive your CPC way lower than what their costs come out to be. Result: lower overall cost per click = lower overall CPA = more $$ to add to your spend budget = more sales with more profit per sale.

After you've figured out what your CPA is coming in at, you can then take your offer to the CPA networks where affiliates will blow your sales up. Just watch out for fraud and poor quality leads cuz it'll cost you.

Video and article marketing are great to get you started.

SEO is good, I miss my stupid banned adwords account (such a long sad story..)

I am starting video marketing actually, no idea how good it is, but i'll post my results soon (posting 10 videos to youtube per day for 10 days)

I write articles for ezine mainly, I still get so many clicks from those, when you think about it it takes about 10 minutes to write one article, let's say that article gets only 15 clicks (a low amount when you take into account that they still get visits in months)

Honestly, there aren't all that many "underground" strategies, just stick to the basics, you'll see results.

There was one thing that I recently saw on both Pat Flynn's & Tyronne Shumm's blogs that I am trying it right now. It's were you create free blogs, from Wordpress.com, Blogger and Weebly (others too I think);then adding content to the blog with a link back to your site.

Why these free blogs?, because they all have HIGH PR, so your getting a lot of High PR back links in the process. Makes sense if you think about it theory.

The only answer for getting targeted traffic is quality link building if you want to rank in Google (loads of advice out there but it is difficult to find method in the madness of mass information! Or directory submissions which are less effective or using Web 2.0 which you really need to research the 'how to before you do'.

You have to go over to the blue print central forum (just Google this! - don't want to provide link as you may consider this bias and affliate!).

Tim and Steve are, to my mind, honest experts that provide second to non advice in all aspects of Internet Marketing and are true experts in SEO. These guys coupled with a caring sharing team of Internet Marketing experts (that post their help and advise on this forum) will help and advise you every step of the way! Please look no further! I have made good money and it has only come about by using/following/mirroring their strategies! I know this sounds a little salesy but this is a forum and there is nothing to buy. Hope this helps...

It is hard to trust anyone in this game isn't it.. I trust these guys and you will see why when you get over their and check out this forum...

SEO will always, always, always be my main source because I got so good at it. Probably because of a few "secrets" or "underground techniques" (to put it in your words) I use which blows away competition even if I see the red X for SOC in MNF. I guess article marketing is my secondary source.

        1. Tight SEO on-page. Good domain name goes a long way.
        2. Great content on the site. Great means good for SEs AND visitors. And keywords (LSI and otherwise) sprinkled properly throughout.
        3. Article Marketing. If you syndicate articles in your niche, not only do you get the backlink juice, but you get traffic.
        4. Blog Commenting. Dunno why, but it works like gold.
        5. Forum Comments. RELEVANT, high-value comments, with a link, either in the content or the sig.

As a note...if you are GIVING something away, it is much easier to drive traffic...then build the list and sell to the list.

The most powerful traffic strategy is just make a short list of all the "repeatable" sources everyone in IM has stated in the past and try each one with your own tests and split tests. Find the ones that work the best for you and take massive action on those.

What works for one IM'r doesn't guarantee it will work for everyone.

Really? I have been doing SEO for years, and the only way I can see that you could classify it as cheap is if you do not value your time...

If you buy SEO Services, those definitely don't come cheap...

And if you are doing it yourself, there is a lot of work involved, so cheap is only cheap if your time is worth next to nothing...

The techniques mentioned so far have all been valid and are worth doing but would hardly be considered "underground".

That phrase immediately makes me think of a sales letter for the latest "cut and paste" money making miracle product.

Create an online chat show, much like the one that Kevin Pollak does. Have successful marketers visit the show, have an interview with you (or someone you select). The marketers can mention their products, as can you or your interviewer. But the interviews should have substance. Want to see how Kevin does it? There. Is that underground enough or different enough? I hope so, it's the only arrow in my quiver.
Sorry this is going off topic but I had thought of something like this.

I think you could do this in any niche, along the lines of interview an expert. You could make it a membership site and have new interviews every month or something.

It would work in so many instances like gardening, any sport, self-help, cooking etc etc.

    Hey Matthew,

The best traffic generation strategy for me right now is my Facebook Page. I post really useful information to it about 3 times a week, with links pointing back to my blog.

It's working really well for me. Especially as I'm only spending about $6 a week for advertising on Facebook and have built over 600 'fans' in about 10 weeks.

Might not be massive figures, but in the Qigong niche, well let's just say I'm happy with it.

    Bye for now

    Marcus

Actually, the best sources of traffic are the rehashed techniques mentioned previously. The question is: "Will they work for you?" The answer to that question is a function of the quality of your content and copy.

This really depends on your target market. There are many niches that do not participate on social networks... which reminds me (sorry a little off topic)

There's only 3 - why would you NOT be using all of them?

      1. SEO - comes from content combined with effective targeting of "buying" keywords. Whether it be a blog, syndicated article, social networking site, online press release...the idea is to get as much keyword relevant content out there as possible. Good if you straddle content that is designed to bring in backlinks and content that is designed to be seen, read & draw interested readers back to your money pages

      2. Paid - PPC, Banners, Offline adds...these are quick methods, but you MUST use direct advertising testing methodologies here or you will go broke fast. I personally like running paid campaigns to test up-front so I can quickly narrow the money keywords down and feed them into #1

      3. Affiliates/partners/JV's - This can being in HUGE traffic and very good conversions as well. Great for traffic, list building and sales. Brings the aspect of leverage into your business as you don't have to be doing all of the marketing and selling - let your affiliates do it for you. To make this really work though you must be proactive and work hard to support your partners, the return can be very nice though.

While you may be able to back-off on #2 as your business matures, when you start out you should be working on #2 to refine your keyword focus, test conversions so that you can maximize the effectinveness of #1 and #3

      Hey,

Me personally, I've written a number of articles and submitted them with my squeeze page as a link on the bottom of the article. Target a specific keyword and then move on to another.

I also like social bookmarking, and creating groups, fan pages on Facebook and Twitter.

      Cheers,
      Owen

I personally beleive in the power social media marketing. If you a small biz cafe or restaurant owner, think you should look into Wavespot wireless. They sell a router that links with your business fan page, so everyone that uses your WiFi becomes your facebook fan, furthermore the "like" is viral in that the visitor's FB network knows that they came to your location...its a great way to build a strong following online. After that its all consistently maintaining an online relationship with you customer.

I've been wondering the same thing. All of these tips are very helpful. I especially like that fact that most of these strategies aren't secret for a reason. I'm trying a new one out: write Really good, helpful, free content on a page linked to your site and some affiliate sites. Then, social bookmark it. I've also been establishing relationships with other bloggers and that seems to be the best, most honest source of traffic generation.

    HI guys,

Personally, I believe article marketing is the best as a good article will travel a long way. With your resource box, sure there will be people who wants to know who is that guys who wrote that 1st class article.

But as for me, I am just running out of ideas in writing. I am not exactly a good writer.

Video is another form but I have not really explore deep enough. But should be very promising.

Just wondering if traffic generation can be out-sourced? Anyone care to share on this?

    Regards

The best traffic method for me has been having a plan and sticking with it. While this is not an actual technique, it really is the most powerful of all tools...

    because...

everything works if you have a really good plan.

Lots of people try article marketing and it works. Lot of them try it and it doesn't work. Then they get mad at the people who told them article marketing works.

Well, it does work great if you have a well concieved plan, work the plan and stick with the plan.

I love getting people who already have lists to mail for me. I've driven a ton of free traffic doing this.

However, when I first tried it, it didn't work and I was pissed.

I gave up and rejected it for a long time. Someone finally convinced me to give it another try. But this time I planned it out and stuck with the plan.

The sticking with it part is really the big key. most people give up too soon. Or they're on to the next big promise, shiny object that's dangled in front of their eyes.

To get JV's to mail for you means you have to find a way to provide value to them and their list, earn their trust and respect and then keep after them to do what you want them to without pissing them off. And the bigger and better their list, the more you have to work at this.

If you're article marketing you need to provide great content, need to know how to write an article, but most importantly, you need to keep writing articles.

Having a plan and then having the focus to work the plan is the big secret.

Video is my favorite. Specifically YouTube. It has proven itself again and again as the lowest cost, highest amount of consistent, reliable, targeted traffic I have ever seen.

You can now create clickable links IN your YouTube videos, track with YouTube Insight, put links on other peoples videos, and even take advantage of a social media angle called Groups that no one seems to use but has been proven time and time again to get more views and subscribers, that turn into visitors to your channel, site, and then opt-in to your list.

I for one have used all of these methods and they totally rock.

Yes I am a YouTube freak, but if you just play around with your own YouTube channel you will SEE what I am talking about.

    Give it a shot!

As funny as this might sound, and I know you don't want it mentioned here; PPC still works for me.
    • I can still get clicks from yahoo for $0.03.
    • Another "secret source" is from mobile advertising platforms - the traffic comes in droves and is very very cheap. But you must make sure your offer converts first & you have landing pages optimized for mobile devices.
    • Facebook traffic can be laser targeted too & cheap.
The key is your landing page.
