Is call the PayPal Fraud Department on your PHONE. Like NOW. go to paypal, click help, and contact. Tell them exactly what's going on.

Agreed. Call paypal now. Don't try to email them from another account. Call them.

Hi Everyone,
Gary: the link does not work.

I am currently on the phone with Paypal; and the Ebay seller is trying to get the purchased product back from Singapore through USPS.

Aiden: I will check out your post.

Paypal did stop the payment to the seller, but that is not fair as he did ship to the address paypal sent him when making the payment (I did send the seller my correct address when I made the purchase, so am unsure why they switched to the paypal shipping address); anyway, at this point it is a total screw up.

How do I protect against this type of hacking into paypal, and worse yet can they hack into your credit card info and bank accounts etc?
do they put something on your computer, and how do you detect it?

After half an hour paypal guy is doing research on my account and has said they can make a claim..... still waiting and listening to elevator music....paypal guy came back and said they will make a claim against the seller...... my reply was the seller is not at fault, paypal sent him the wrong shipping address, which was fraudulently put on my account....on to next paypal person....more waiting...came back to say I had made a gift (donated $1 to cancer research when I made the purchase) and this changed my shipping address????? on to next paypal girl who said it sounds like you are making a fraud claim; ah ha someone actually gets what I have been explaining for the last 45 minutes.... more research...elevator music... girl says she will transfer me to the fraud department....more waiting....same thing again... older lady says it sounds like you are making an unauthorized account access claim... another ah ha moment... lady makes claim and says they will Email me in 10 days when the investigation is complete.

Any knowledgeable help about protecting my computer from this type of access would be appreciated I do have some anti virus and malware software on my computer, but not too familiar with it.

Happened to me last month. Except they ordered a Victoria Secret Gift Gard from Ebay. I was on the phone 2 minutes after the transaction took place. I got my 100 bucks back 10 days later.

My Advice and what I did?

Pay 5 bucks for a security key that Paypal will mail you and never have your account hacked again

I would recommend this too. I have purchased a security key card (there is a card and a mobile [cell] phone option). The card took a week to arrive, but gives additional peace of mind at a small price.

Hi Everyone,
No one from Paypal even mentioned a Security Key, which I would gladly pay $5 for after this fiasco.

I'm kind of wondering how donating $1 got my shipping address changed, do they use my donation info to hack my account? The paypal shipping address was my real name and address, but the country was changed.
Also, does the purchased product actually go to an address in wherever? It must be like Christmas every day for them.

Is there any good info products out there that explain more about this and how to guard against it?

  Not sure about the paypal issue, but for your computer you should check out an awesome (and free) tool called hijackthis. If you're under vista/7, do the scans as administrator (after you installed, right click on the icon and "run as administrator", then save the logfile and paste it into the field at hijackthis.de, it will show you what's right and wrong in your system and detect hidden entries in your registry or programs that run but you can't see. Like keyloggers, which are most likely the way someone got hold of your password.
  
  Anyway, if you can't find anything with this tool or an antivirus, I'd definitely recommend you to reformat your computer.

  I checked out Hijack this and it came up as all safe.
  I probably would prefer another option to reformatting my computer, it took me a full day last time to sort it out. I do have external hard drives with most of my info is on them.
  
  Paypal made me change my password in order for me to access my full account.
  
  I'm thinking to upgrade my AVG to the Internet Security one, anyone have any comments on this program?

While I am not able to share with you anything about Paypal, I think you're email might have been hacked through something like a KEYLOGGER.

They even have something called the SCREEN LOGGER + KEYLOGGER.

I've been hacked once. Since then I am extra careful with the sites I was going to visit.

They can LOG everything that you type and that you can see from your screen.

So the last time after I was being hacked, not only did I change my passwords, but I also re-formatted the whole computer.

What is more scary would be the recently produced plugin by Mozilla Firefox, I tried that at home, and I can HACK into my own account within seconds!

Check that out in the post which I've posted in my signature..

While that key is a great addition and a must-have, its not accurate to say you can never have this happen again. All one must do is answer 2 security questions to bypass the key #.

If the keylogger isn't cleared and those questions have ever been typed in while infected, you're obviously still at risk.

In addition to the good advice above, especially dealing with keyloggers, also be careful what networks you log on through.
Even if you are logging in with a secure password through a secure website, there are ways for people on the same network as you to gain access to your information.
Keywords here are "on the same network". As in, if you are using your neighbor's unsecured internet connection, or using a free wifi network (at Starbucks or something), you are at risk because another people on that network could be hackers.

what did you do so your account hacked? Those hackers can't hack someone's account out of blue. Did you maybe email submit to shady sites or something?

He didn't have to do anything. Hackers most certainly CAN hack something out of the blue. Since he said he had a recent gmail hack, that is likely the problem.

I had my PayPal hacked one time right after my gmail was hacked. It was the gmail account attached to my PayPal address.

OP, immediately switch any Gmail accounts to secure (use https) in the account settings of each account. That will block further hacks, at least until the hackers break that, too...lol.

doesn't make any sense, there's no way hackers could get your email address in the first place. unless, if you joined forum A or membership site A and the hacker hacks the database or posted your email publicly via facebook and similar sites or your website doesn't have WHOIS guard

There is a physical version, and a mobile version.

While it's an extra step in getting into your accounts (paypal in this case), that extra step can save you a ton of time and money in the long run.

Hey Paul! Welcome to the cyber world!

Upgrading your AVG won't necessarily help you at all.... the issue may go even further than that. If i should go into details about hacking then you'll probably never turn your computer on again. Lets try to keep it simple.

First ensure AVG is always updated, thats a given it might have been a new virus when it wasn't. Even more so realize that a virus scanner can only identify viruses that has been caught by the companies and a signature made i.e. brand new viruses will always get past them.

Next, to the comment that states that hackers cant hack something out of the blue... lies.. and this is what may have happened to you. newer trojan horses incorporates drive by downloads so all u have to do is visit the wrong site and u r infected.

But enough of how it happened, protecting yourself.
If your gmail, or any e-mail address, got compromised then the first safe assumption.. and only safe assumption... is that every account that uses that e-mail is compromised. If they choose "Lost my password" in paypal, or your bank account, would it send a reset e-mail to that address?

If thats the case you have to change the passwords for all accounts that could possibly be affected, not just the one that you got hit from. That being said now avg alone isn't enough to protect you, as i said avg is only there for viruses but there are so many ways to get infected.

Here is a good thing to do.
1) Install Malwarebytes, more than just viruses this will search for corrupted registry, trojan horses, malicious cookies, and adware that may be harmful.
2) Keep software up to date, more specifically browsers (and all addons) and java, flash, etc. and up to date doesnt mean 2-7 days after... as soon as it pops up that an update is available... take it
3) Boot sector viruses will bypass antivirus all together and some trojan horses will connect to legal programs (internet explorer) so they may not show up on your avg scan. run malware bytes on ure device immediately before making any other changes to your accounts to see if you have keyloggers etc installed. Problem is these programs aren't viruses, so they wont always be detected by ure anti-virus... google family keylogger to see what i mean just a decent software used for indecent means.

4)Avoid hacked scripts, suspicious sites, or just randomly browsing and clicking just any popups like they were a plague.

5) USE YOUR FIREWALL - too many people turn off the windows firewall cause its annoying. rule of thumbs, if its easy for you to get everywhere its probably easy for them to get in as well.

6) Greatest reason most people get infected E-MAIL - If you get that e-mail saying "You're device has been shipped your package number is attached" and you see an exe file... its not your package number its a virus. If you get an e-mail saying "Your wife's photo attached" and it has a zip, exe, etc file. Dont open it, its a virus. Quite frankly unless you know who its from dont download any file in ure e-mail, they are all viruses, trojans, worms, or something aiming to destroy your computer. also realize that the people you know may be infected as well! so really dont download any program that you are unsure of.

I recall looking for some software and downloaded a free trial which I later deleted, so that may have been what gave access to hack my Email.

I did order the Paypal security key and had it mailed to me.

I have the https enabled in my gmail account, but it was still hacked, so I changed my password.

I will change the passwords on my other Email accounts.

I am trying Malwarebytes; do I need to upgrade, or will the free one do the job?
The quick scan came up as No malicious items detected; so everything I have tried like AVG, Windows Defender, windows malware defender and hijackthis all came up clear, so I am pretty sure my computer is ok; so I will not be doing a reformat.

Normally I do not open Email attachments, unless from expected and trusted sources.

Hopefully all the advice given will resolve the hacking issue.

Hey Paul, hackers know how to make their spyware/malware/virus fully undetected so very much likely detected by anti-spyware/malware/virus. I think they've checked it via virustotal before spreading it. If the source is spyware/malware/virus from your PC , chances are you're not protected. Even if you change your password, you'll be hacked again. My advice is backup your important data and re-format your PC and change all your passwords or use system restore.

btw, i got trojan on my computer after i downloaded whitesmoke translator. so, guys, be careful when you want to download program from untrusted publisher.

Hi,
The initial problem was that someone changed my shipping address in paypal; Paypal sent that address to the seller, who in good faith shipped the product to Singapore, when I live in Canada.
So, Paypal think I am responsible for not protecting my account, the seller thinks I am responsible, as it was my Paypal address they shipped to; to date I have waited over 5 weeks for a product that is in Singapore; and paypal have charged back the money to the seller, but not to my credit card.
Anyway, here's what I did: changed my Email passwords; bought the paypal security card for $5 (which has a button on the card to reset the security code, which is in a digital window on the card-a really neat bit of technology); removed all old addresses from paypal and added my current address.
Another thing with Paypal is I made two claims, one for unauthorized use of my account and one for not receiving the product. The problem here was Paypal canceled the claim for not receiving the product without telling me and 10 days later told me I was at fault for not checking the addresses on my account. Silly me, for thinking Paypal provided the security and any hacker can just hack into my account and I'm to blame; at that point I made a claim with Paypal for non receipt of product.
So, if your paypal account is hacked and your product shipped to someone else, then just make a claim for not receiving the product.

I certainly do not think I am guilty for not knowing how hackers operate, or that I should have preplanned for my email account and Paypal being hacked. Am I naive expecting people to be honest and not have this happen, definitely.
A crook is a crook, they are responsible, and they alone are the guilty ones. The product seller, Paypal, myself and all those reading this who may change their way of doing things are the collateral damage from all of this.

That was the first thing I did, and was told to make a claim, which I did.
My problem with Paypal was that my shipping address (which had been hacked and changed to Singapore, and I live in Canada) had been given to the seller by Paypal, which superseded the address I gave to the seller when I ordered the product.
I was on the phone for hours to paypal trying to explain the problem that my account had been hacked and Paypal had given the seller the wrong address.
I keep going to the Paypal website and it shows the claim process, but no real answers as to what is happening? Then I call Paypal and they say my claim is being processed and investigated, but still no answers.
I email the seller who tells me he has had the product price deducted from him and he is out of pocket because he shipped to the address Paypal gave him. The seller is currently waiting for the product to hopefully be returned from Singapore.
The price of the product has not been put back on my credit card.
So, if you are with Paypal, please ask them to Email or call me to let me know what is going on????? PM me if you are with paypal and I will give you my phone#.
I did not hack my own paypal account and place a shipping address to Singapore when I live in Canada. The seller shipped in good faith to the address in Singapore that paypal gave him.
My thinking is there is a security problem with Paypal, however I did change my Email passwords, got the security code card and removed all old addresses from Paypal.

The reason I posted here was to find out how a Paypal account can be hacked and how to remedy that.
All I want is my product to be shipped to me and not Singapore????????????????????

  I have said all along that this should not be the sellers problem, and I know very well how to operate a computer; so I am unsure why you would insult my intelligence?
  
  My Email was hacked after I donated some money along with my purchase to cancer research, and then someone hacked my Paypal shipping address. I have firewalls, anti spyware and malware; have the https enabled in my gmail account; do not open Email attachments or exe files; back up my data on external HDs; occasionally reformat my main HDs and do system restores; and can build a computer from the ground up (mother board, chip, power supply etc).
  If you have anything positive that will enlighten people how not to get hacked, then please post it; that is the purpose of this posting.

  I feel for you and what you have gone through. I have also had my email account hacked and they pinched all my contacts and posted them an email about a recommendation of a new computer I had just purchased (Which I never did of course).
  
  I had the concern of future hack so now I regularly change pass words on all my financial and email accounts. It's a bit of a hassle but gives me more piece of mind.
  
  I also run security software and backup on external drives but I think we have to remember that all the security software in the world is always 1 step behind the hackers.
  
  I know I haven't advised much but I hope you are able to get it sorted.

  The seller, myself and Paypal are the victims; all I want is my product.

really sorry to hear about this and hope you get it sorted. I'm like you, I have what what I think is enough security features in place, am careful what sites I visit, what I download, etc

Having said that I've just activated the sms security key on my Paypal account after reading this so while I feel for what you've gone through I'm really glad you posted it here as a warning to the rest of us.

My hope was that Paypal would look at how the account was hacked and help resolve that.
Anyway, glad to have helped someone else avoid experiencing what I went through.

The bottom line is to get the Paypal security key, which you have to use every time you sign into your account.

I had my hotmail account hacked a couple days ago they used a keylogger program that came through one of the files I downloaded from a plr site;
I closed the account down but not before I got an email from the son-Did you really buy a motorcycle? LOL OOps shut er down thankfully that is all that happened.
Be careful to scan every file when downloading apparently some of thee folks are using this kind of file or maybe it is the person who I bought it from either way be careful out there.

I guess you got a call with paypal? if not yet please do it right now.
Next time never share your password and set a new strong password security..
