Twitter is one of the very good toold for online marketing. But unfortunatey a lot of people misuse it which results in spamming people with useless tweets. You can use Twitter to market your website but don't tweet a million times a day. I would say a maximum of 20 tweets per day is more than enough: but make sure you don't ONLY tweet to promote your site: post for example one tweet for promotion, one quote and one tweet for free tips, and repeat.
Just remember, whatever you tweet should have value otherwise people won't find it interesting.

I have actually found Twitter to be an effective way to get new pages spidered quickly.

        How does this work?

I'm wondering if I should create a Twitter account now, or when I'm ready to market. I hate looking at other people's Twitter pages and seeing nothing there.

I also use Twitter and it's very effective in promoting links and products especially with the number of followers you can get. One of the things you have to be aware of is spamming and the people who will tell you that it's for spamming. Just be sure to use it properly to build up relationships and result to better business connections.

I am using twitter a lot, and from experience, I must say you should not have more than 8% link tweets. I mean to say that if you are tweeting 100 times a day, then only 8, atmost 10 should have links in your tweets.

This way you can be sure of not getting banned - very imp.
You'll get real people to follow you and not the bots - Most imp.

I know, it takes time but this is the real thing I have experienced personally.

Other people keep on tweeting with links every 10 minutes but ultimately they have to look for followers the next day. Whereas in my case, the followers remain my follower for good because they think I am delivering content and I am not on twitter coz of making money. This perception you should create in the minds of your followers. How you do it is upto you.

    Good luck.
