It depends if you seek quality or quantity. You can go over to odesk and hire someone for $2/hour and have 100+ links by tomorrow. You can also develop some highly compelling content that is so good that people would WANT to link to your content freely.

But just for a new site, I would recommend submitting to some free link directories (not a ton, but some), and then put a link in your signature, etc. Just don't get so caught up in links that it becomes more important than making a compelling site of high quality.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

Put some articles up also and you can get some decent backlinks from some of the better directories. If you are going to submit to article directories, here is a list of auto approve ones.

They may not be the best but you can get some backlinks from them and they auto approve.

Guest blog posting will get you some high quality links... It will take some time to develop the relationships necessary... Or if time is more important to you than money, you can just do some paid directory submissions to sites like BOTW.

    3)Directory submissions
    4)Article marketing
    5)RSS
    6)Social bookmarking
    7)Forums/profiles
There are obviosuly more than above.. But my advice would be go for quality links and obtain from diverse sources

    Some of the favorites...

    article marketing
    blog posts
    profile backlinks

Work on two of any of the above on a monthly basis and you'll get big time traffic

I would start by purchasing some high page rank and edu links at fiverr.com then to make sure those links got indexed by 1) make sure you ping them. pingdevice.com is a good bulk ping machine, then 2) put all the urls together on one RSS using html2rss.com then run the new rss through identi.ca.

When you add a link to a forum profile do you just need to register a forum account then add your link in your signature or do you actually have to make a post on the forum also? I tried it on some forums without making a post but when i used the backlink checker, the links don't display.
