Good content?

I hear that with good enough content you can get up into the top few pages with no backlinks, but it seems backlinks prevail because the sites on the top searches may have wordpress blogs with the default page still in there, and pages with 10 words, just really sketchy looking sites with very bad content, and they show up on page one.

So where is he balance? Should I even worry about having above average content? Seems like I should worry about content 1% and 99% backlinks!

    It depends on the competition. Great content with zero backlinks is not going to get you anywhere in the the most competitive niches online.

    However, for lower competition keywords great content can really boost your domain's authority. I have plenty of niche sites that have 100% original and unique content written by me that is completely relevant to the domain. The articles rank well without much backlink love.

    On the contrary I also have a few sites in more competitive niches and even with the great content I still have to build links for the site and its inner pages to rank.

    In my opinion, don't make excused to create just "above-average" content and starting writing great articles that do there job.

    It's not an excuse to just half ass my sites, I just don't wanna waste the time to write great content on the site if it's not pleasing to the search engine. I mean seriously, I care about traffic, it's my top priority as of now, and I'm looking for the best way to get on the top few pages in a moderately competative niche. Just seems like backlinking is a handful to do manually and it deserves more of my attention

      As I just stated in another thread. Write for people not search engines.

      Link building is something that can be outsourced for cheap (so can article writing, except not so cheap for great content).

      What do you think is going to convert better when you finally get the traffic from your SEO efforts? Crap-tacular content or great content that makes you an authority in the niche.

      If it's not an excuse, then why raise the question? As bloggingpro says you write for people not search engines. I know we want to make money, but why should anything you put your name to, not be the best you have to offer whether it be original or outsourced. SEO'd or not SEO'd.

      Any spamy nonsensical gibberish gives article marketers a bad name. You don't have to write like E.B. White or Hemingway. But we should take pride in giving the best we have to offer. In other words, I know that I'm doing my best even though I may never win a Pulitzer Prize for it. But, I keep learning and trying to improve.

    Onpage and Offpage SEO go hand in hand when shooting to the top of the search engines. When you do a diversified mixture of both strategies, over a sustained period of time you will eventually get past your competition.

    Ideally, you should be doing on page and off page optimization. There are many different areas of SEO. You shouldn't ignore on page, and strictly get backlinks. You should be doing both. However, I wouldn't spend a TON of time on your content, you need to be able to split it both up.

    Content is king, backlinks are queen.

    Never cheap out on the content on your sites. Great content will prevail in the long run. You still need good backlinking though.

    I don't think there is any truth to this. My results have shown that both good and bad content rank equally well with the proper SEO. Well established sites with quality content may rank well but quality content on it's own hasn't shown to be much of a ranking influence.

    Now, regarding content, I'm going to take a different approach than most.

    Forget about good content and bad content and think Content With A Purpose.

    Simply writing a great article that lacks direction or more importantly isn't directing your readers towards your desired goal isn't going to do you any more good than a poorly spun article.

    There should be a purpose behind every word you put online. Be it promoting a product you are an affiliate for or pulling traffic through a link in your resource box, your words should be influencing and moving your readers in the direction you want them to go.

    Quality content and writing for people is important but don't forget why you are writing in the first place.
